Ninety-seven percent of bets on the Tommies is the sort of public stamp that raises the temperature. Now, the dudes. Nolan Minessale (G) is a true headliner at 20.7 points per game, second in the Summit, and sixth nationally in total points. Nick Janowski adds 16.2 a night and already flashed a 32-point ceiling at North Dakota, so the backcourt isn’t a one-man sermon. South Dakota State answers with Joe Sayler at 18.6 per game and Damon Wilkinson (C) at 15.0 with 8.8 boards, which gives them a real interior base. Kalen Garry has also shown he can scale up, dropping 20 at Arizona, and that matters when the road asks for nerve. This is a scoring-rich game, but it’s also a decision game, because St. Thomas wants paint touches and clean kickouts. South Dakota State wants the glass and a steadier diet of second-chance points.
The case against an over is the same old trap, just dressed in new clothes. St. Thomas steals possessions at an 11.0% steals-per-play clip, and South Dakota State is only okay at 14.6% turnovers. If those become runouts and empty trips, the total can wobble early. There’s also a weird stall risk for St. Thomas, because it rarely generates its own second shots. Whistle risk is present but not dominant here, so the volatility comes from threes and turnovers, not endless parades.
I’m staying on over 155.5, and I’d still play it up to 157.5. St. Thomas should lean into spread spacing and rim pressure, because that 62.9% two-point finish is a cheat code. South Dakota State should answer by pounding the glass and feeding Wilkinson touches, because St. Thomas can be had on second-chance math. If Minessale and Janowski get a few early paint collapses, the kickout threes start raining. If Sayler finds rhythm and the Jackrabbits keep producing extra shots, they’ll keep dragging the score upward.
