Oklahoma City Thunder at Houston Rockets prediction, pick on Thursday 1/15/26

Tonight these two Western Conference teams will clash again for the first time since their season opener, a thrilling overtime game in which the Thunder squeaked out the win by one point. It’ll be a competitive affair tonight as the 34-7 Thunder try to maintain their vice grip over this conference with an important win against the 23-14 Rockets, who are in the sixth seed and understand how important this game is.

The Thunder are currently –192 favorites at DraftKings Sportsbook, with the point total set to 222.5. Below, I’ll break down tonight’s matchup and offer my prediction.


OKC Thunder at Houston Rockets preview, prediction

This Thunder team is a juggernaut squad that runs deep and has championship pedigree. They look like the favorites to repeat their title run from last season and have the best defense in the league. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander basically had a perfect campaign last season, having won the MVP, the NBA title, and the Finals MVP. Tonight will be a tough matchup for him, which is evidenced by his 1-9 shooting from beyond-the-arc in their season opener. SGA only got to 35 points in that matchup because he took 26 shots and 14 free-throw attempts. This Rockets’ defense is legit, and Amen Thompson should be draped all over SGA tonight as Houston forces OKC to find other solutions for their scoring. It’s tough to truly deny SGA, but the Rockets have the personnel to give them real trouble.

The Rockets are also looking for a chip, as evidenced by their offseason acquisition of Kevin Durant, an aging but elite wing who solves Houston’s half-court offense issues. It’s puzzling how a few of the Rockets’ games have ended with the ball not in Durant’s hands, but presumably he is there to space the offense and apply some serious pressure to the mid range and three point land. It hurts them to not have Fred VanVleet, who is a veteran playmaker, but the Thunder will be missing Isaiah Hartenstein, and possibly Lu Dort tonight.

Thunder at Rockets pick, best bet

Best bet: Houston Rockets +5.5

Given the close game in their season opener and the Thunder missing Hartenstein and potentially Lu Dort, I’m trusting the Rockets to cover the spread tonight.
