UPDATE: Okongwu received treatment and stitches for a head laceration, per Hawks PR. He returned to the game during the second quarter.
Atlanta Hawks big man Onyeka Okongwu suffered an injury during Friday’s game vs. the New York Knicks and is in the locker room.
To end the first quarter, Okongwu collided with Kevin McCullar Jr. when the latter attempted to steal the ball above the three-point line. The pair knocked heads before Okongwu fell to the ground and headed to the locker room afterwards. He may just receive treatment and be able to return if it’s a facial laceration, but he does not yet have an official injury status.
Okongwu played seven minutes on Friday prior to the injury. He was off to an excellent start, recording a team-high 11 points along with two rebounds.
If Okongwu does not return, watch for Kristaps Porzingis or Mouhamed Gueye to absorb additional minutes in his place.
The Hawks are 16-19 on the campaign and just 2-8 across their last 10 games. Any absence for Okongwu, the team’s starting center, would prove a significant loss for the rotation.
