Another year, another injury-riddled campaign for Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Chris Godwin. After playing in only seven of 17 games last year, Godwin will play in his sixth out of 12 games on Thursday. Godwin didn’t take long to ramp up after missing more than a month with injury. After turning four targets into two catches for nine yards against the Rams, he looked closer to his old self with a 3/78/0 receiving line on five targets against the Cardinals. That was followed by a true Godwin line of 5/55/0 on eight targets against the Saints. With Emeka Egbuka struggling in that game, it seemed like Godwin was on the verge of reclaiming the WR1 role in this offense.
But now Mike Evans is back. Mr. 1,000 Yards hasn’t played since October 20 due to a broken collarbone but now returns when he’s needed most. It’s safe to assume Evans will command a large target share. On top of that, young wideout Jalen McMillan also returns to the lineup after his IR stint. It makes this wide receiver room awfully complicated.
Navigating multiple injury returns makes for tricky business. But Godwin will still be a dependable target for Baker Mayfield when the chains need to be moved. Even if other receivers get the higher-value targets, Godwin will be there over the middle and at the boundaries when his quarterback needs him. As a wideout best deployed from the slot, he should see dependable looks and tally at least four catches on Thursday Night Football.
