NFL Week 14 Start or Sit: Omarion Hampton or Kimani Vidal?

For the first time since sustaining an ankle injury all the way back in Week 5, it appears that Omarion Hampton will be available to play in tonight’s Monday Night Football tilt against the Eagles. Hampton is officially listed as questionable, and technically woke up this morning still on the Chargers’ IR, but according to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, Los Angeles is expected to activate the rookie for Week 14’s primetime clash.

Will Hampton hit the ground running? How will his presence impact Kimani Vidal, who has been quite the fantasy asset in his own right the past two months? Let’s break it all down before this all-important MNF game with massive fantasy football implications.

Omarion Hampton Fantasy Outlook

Before we project forward, I think it’s crucial to look back at exactly how Omarion Hampton was being utilized prior to his injury. As you would expect from a running back that was taken with the 22nd-overall pick in this past summer’s draft, Hampton was a massive part of the Chargers’ offensive game plan in the first four weeks of the season, seeing at least a 79% snap share in three of his initial four NFL starts. That didn’t lead to immediate success, as Hampton underwhelmed in Week 1 and Week 2, but the 22-year-old rebounded with a breakout performance in Week 3, registering 129 scrimmage yards and a touchdown in Week 3 against a stout Broncos defense. He’d then rip-off 128 rushing yards in Week 4 versus the Giants. Needless to say, things were trending in a very positive direction for the rookie.

Really, you couldn’t ask for a better situation for a fantasy running back. Hampton was the clear RB1 on a team that possessed a smash-mouth football ethos under head coach Jim Harbaugh. That obviously translated into volume. In fact, through the opening five weeks of the season, Hampton joined Jahmyr Gibbs as the lone backs in the league with at least 300 rushing yards and 20 receptions — and the rookie was able to do all this despite leaving Los Angeles’ Week 5 matchup with the Commanders due to injury.

Kimani Vidal Fantasy Outlook

It seems like revisionist history now, but when Hampton got hurt and placed on injured reserve, it wasn’t immediately clear that Kimani Vidal would be the next man up. Heading into a Week 6 contest against the Dolphins, many wondered if Hassan Haskins would be given first crack at the lead back role, especially considering Vidal had only been on the Chargers’ practice roster for the first month of 2025. After Vidal racked up 124 rushing yards on 18 carries, there were no longer any questions.

Vidal hasn’t been the most consistent fantasy asset in the world, seemingly fluctuating between high-end performances and absolute duds, but it’s difficult not to commend a player with three 100-yard rushing games who was a mid-season waiver wire pick-up. It’s also worth noting that Vidal has seen a similar “bell cow” role since taking Hampton’s job, even exceeding a 72% snap share in four of Los Angeles’ past five games. That includes a 76.1% snap rate in Week 13’s lopsided victory over the Raiders, a contest where Vidal collected 126 rushing yards and a touchdown on a whopping 25 carries. The Chargers just haven’t been interested in a running back by committee approach this season — at least not yet.

The Bottom Line

I think it’s safe to assume that even if Omarion Hampton re-gains his starting spot in Week 14, he won’t be challenging for a 75% snap share or 25 touches. Whether that says more about his conditioning or the impact Kimani Vidal has made in his absence is unclear; but it doesn’t really matter at the end of the day. What matters is we’re now dealing with a time share, even if it’s only for a short period while Hampton finds his footing. I’d say the Bucky Irving situation in Tampa Bay is analogous here. Irving missed two months of action, and while he’s been heavily featured in the two games since his return, he’s also only hovered around a 50% snap rate. That feels like where Hampton will land versus the Eagles.

Ironically, Philadelphia is directly on the heels of being eaten alive by a running back duo, giving some hope to those left holding onto their once promising Vidal fantasy shares. D’Andre Swift and Kyle Monangai each ran for at least 125 yards and a touchdown against the Eagles on Black Friday — and that was with talented defensive tackle Jalen Carter active. Carter will not be in pads for tonight’s contest, which is an issue, as Philadelphia has surrendered the fourth-most opponent rushing yards per game since the beginning of Week 11 (160.0).

Still, given the general air of uncertainty, I’d have Hampton as a low-end RB2 in Week 14, with Vidal as more of a FLEX option. In DFS contests like DraftKings’ $1.25M Monday Night Showdown, Hampton is my preferred play with a salary just $400 more than his teammate.
