NHL Ice Breaker Pick for Thursday, November 20
Emil Heineman First Goalscorer (+2000)
The strategy is to avoid chalk plays and identify teams that either score or allow tons of first-period goals. Given the fact that the first four Ice Breakers resulted in at least $1,000 in bonus bets for bettors, the chalk plays aren’t hitting. Enter Emil Heineman, who holds +2000 odds to be the first goalscorer in Thursday night’s Islanders vs. Red Wings game.
Heineman skates on New York’s first line alongside Bo Horvat and Kyle Palmieri and ranks second on the team in goals (9). The 24-year-old has netted three goals in the past four games, and draws a matchup against John Gibson and the Red Wings tonight. Gibson is 4-5-1 with a 3.31 GAA and .875 SV%, and he ranks 54th in goals saved above expected. Five of Heineman’s nine goals this season have come in the first period, including his last three goals. Detroit has allowed the 10th-fewest first-period goals, but Gibson has been underwhelming in his past three starts, and Heineman ranks second on the Islanders in goals per 60.
