So far, the highly-anticipated UEFA Champions League league phase slate match between reigning UCL champions PSG and German giants Bayern Munich, who entered the match week in first and second, respectively, in the league phase table, has been an unmitigated disaster for Les Parisiens.
Not only have the Bundesliga leaders scored twice through Luis Díaz, PSG forward and Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembele already left the game in the 25th minute after suffering an injury.
In the third minute of stoppage time, PSG’s situation went from bad to worse. Díaz made a reckless challenge along the right sideline, bringing down right back Achraf Hakimi. As Díaz and Hakimi battled for the ball, Hakimi’s left leg was caught underneath Díaz. The Moroccan, who was celebrating his 27th birthday, was on the ground for several minutes in obvious agony, and he eventually hopped off with the support of two of his teammates, unable to put any weight on the injured leg. He was immediately replaced by Senny Mayulu. After a VAR review, Díaz’s challenge was deemed worthy of a red card.
Last season, Hakimi finished fourth in Ballon d’Or voting after a 13-goal, 13-assist season, and he was off to a tremendous start to the 2025-26 campaign, assisting Gonçalo Ramos’ winning goal in PSG’s 2-1 win over Barcelona earlier in the league phase. He’s an everyday starter for arguably the world’s best team and captains the Moroccan men’s national team, which begins play in the Africa Cup of Nations on December 21. Morocco will host the tournament.
