New Orleans Pelicans star Zion Williamson entered Tuesday questionable to play against the Charlotte Hornets. Now, he’ll miss tonight’s contest due to injury — as well as several more games.
Per ESPN’s Shams Charania, Williamson will miss seven to 10 days with a left hamstring strain.
Williamson was previously managing a foot issue, but popped up on Tuesday’s injury report with left hamstring soreness. It appears the issue was a little more serious than expected with the new diagnosis, which will likely sideline him until November 10 against the Portland Trail Blazers at the earliest.
The 25-year-old big man averages 22.8 points, 6.8 rebounds and 4.6 assists through his first five games of the Pelicans’ season. He leads all New Orleans players in all three major categories as well as steals with 2.0 per contest. As such, his absence deals a major blow to an 0-6 squad still seeking its first win of the campaign.
In Williamson’s absence, one can expect Trey Murphy III to see additional opportunities as a ball-handler and shot-creator. Rookie Derik Queen could also move up into the starting five as well, though the Pelicans may shift Jordan Poole into the starting lineup and move Herb Jones to the four.
