Across the three games London played with Penix Jr. last year, they connected for 22 catches on 39 targets for 352 yards and two touchdowns. He has been targeted the eighth-most times in the NFL so far this season, which is especially impressive considering the Falcons already had their bye week. London got off to a bit of a slow start to the season, being held to 55 yards or fewer in the first three weeks, but is back on track to producing like one of the top pass catchers in football.
Looking at the matchup, the 49ers have been a middle-of-the-pack defense to start the year. They rank 15th in the league in points and yards allowed, as well as 18th in passing yards given up, 19th in yards per pass attempt, and 17th in passing touchdowns conceded. To take it a step further, London is coming off back-to-back games with 110+ yards through the air. He has been targeted 26 times and pulled in 18 receptions across the past two games alone. It is also not coincidental that this happened immediately following the lifeless 30-0 loss to the Carolina Panthers in Week 3.
This was a wake-up call for the entire Falcons’ team, and they have returned with a clear focus on making London a focal point of the offense. The USC product played a season-high 97.1% of offensive snaps last week and will be looking to continue building off this. Concerns regarding the 49ers’ defense should only increase following last week’s gruesome injury to Fred Warner.
Count on Atlanta continuing to air it out at a high rate and for London to be at the epicenter of this. Jaxon Smith-Njigba lit up this same defense for 124 yards through the air in the season opener, and expect the Falcons to utilize London in a similar game plan.
