BYU Cougars vs. Utah Utes prediction, pick for CFB Week 8 on Saturday 10/18/25

The Holy War returns under lights, with both helmets ranked and ravenous. Utah brings a bruising 5–1 stride into Provo. BYU counters with unbeaten bravado and a fan base that screams in unison. It’s the first ranked-versus-ranked Holy War since 2009, and the stakes feel swollen. Kyle Whittingham has stacked nine straight wins in the series, yet the memory of 2024 still burns. BYU stole that one with Will Ferrin’s 44-yard dagger at four seconds. This is only the second Big 12 edition of the rivalry, now framed by genuine title leverage. FOX planted its flag here—Big Noon Kickoff on campus and a 6 p.m. MT stage. The nation will be watching. Both programs ride the league’s two best rushing identities. The field will tilt on steel, leverage, and stubborn yards. Meanwhile, leaders across Utah begged for civility this week as “Rival Right” returned, underscoring the rivalry’s cultural voltage. Below is my prediction for CFB Week 8’s game between the BYU Cougars and the Utah Utes.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

BYU vs. Utah prediction, preview

Utah’s run game sets the cadence. The Utes lead the Big 12 at 248.2 rushing yards per game. BYU sits just behind at 238.0. NaQuari Rogers, Wayshawn Parker, and quarterback Devon Dampier just combined for 378 rushing yards and five touchdowns. The Utes have also hit the gas. Their tempo jumped from 126th to 44th under Jason Beck. That pace amplifies a line that strings together five yards per snap on scoring drives. The result is clean: Utah ranks 14th in points per drive despite only 52nd in yards per play. Beck’s plan marries motion, split-flow, and quarterback keepers. The Utes want your fits frayed before the ball is snapped.

BYU’s answer is familiar and fearless. L.J. Martin has surged to 652 rushing yards, the Big 12 lead. Bear Bachmeier has buried defenses with seven rushing touchdowns. The passing piece lags. The Cougars throw 6.4% below expectation, the second-lowest rate in the league. Explosive completions beyond 15 yards sit near the national basement. That profile invites Utah’s front to hunt.

John Henry Daley elevates the chaos when two playcalls converge on one another. The All-American edge owns nine sacks, second nationally. He is the tip of a ferocious unit that wins with length and torque. Utah’s run defense lives in the backfield and closes alleys before they breathe. The Utes are second in yards-before-contact allowed. BYU’s defense ranks ninth there, but Utah’s offense ranks eighth in creating that early space. When Utah stacks the box, opponents manage only 4.4 yards per carry. Now layer motion: Utah uses pre-snap motion on 44% of handoffs and averages 6.3 yards per carry on those plays. BYU’s defense has bled 6.0 yards per carry against motion looks, a 107th-ranked leak. That is a seam Beck will rip, again and again.

The drive math confirms the trench thesis. SP+ rates Utah at 19.6 and BYU at 16.6. Utah sits 16th overall with a defense ranked sixth. BYU lands 23rd with a defense ranked 15th. FEI projects Utah by two, 26–24, and calls the game a coin-flip tier. SP+ lands near a dead heat as well, with a 24–24 expectation and a 49% edge toward BYU. Quality Drives sharpen the picture. BYU’s offense is third nationally at sustaining quality possessions. Utah’s defense is 21st at strangling them. The fulcrum is early-down rush efficiency and the strain that motion imposes on Cougar fits. If Utah stays on schedule, BYU will chase grass rather than dictate it.

Utah vs. BYU pick, best bet

The counterargument has teeth. BYU is 6–0. The Cougars haven’t blinked at home. Their backs fall forward and their quarterback hammers edges. Utah already took a beating at Texas Tech. If BYU owns the first quarter, Provo’s noise may snowball. But the résumés split under scrutiny. BYU hasn’t faced a ranked opponent or a team with a winning record this season. The schedule strength sits deep in the eighties. Utah, outside the Tech game, has smothered everyone. The Utes have allowed just 14 points to every other Big 12 foe. Since that loss with a banged-up quarterback, Utah has detonated teams and tightened the screws. The 2024 finish lives in this locker room, too—controversy and all—which adds real, sharp motive. BYU’s unbeaten veneer is real, yet untested. Utah’s form is hardened by attrition and answers.

Trend watchers will note Utah’s 5–1 against the spread profile. BYU has struggled historically against ranked teams at the window. The total sits in the hinge. Two run-centric identities can still explode if explosives land. Yet the defensive bones favor patience, not chaos. My lean is toward a possession game where each red-zone trip weighs double.

We should also note the personnel board. BYU expects key linebackers Jack Kelly and Isaiah Glasker available after midweek reports, a meaningful jolt for run fits. Safety availability remains a subplot, with Raider Damuni’s status reported as doubtful by some outlets. Utah’s depth chart has churned all month, but the bye helped triage several defensive pieces. The attrition angle still matters in the fourth quarter.

Here’s how I expect it to play. Utah leans into pre-snap movement and quarterback keep. Whittingham’s front squeezes zone and forces cutbacks to tight shoulders. BYU’s offense finds first downs, then feels the vise on second. Daley and friends tee off on known pass situations and iron Bachmeier into third-and-long. Utah’s offense stacks eight-play marches that bruise BYU’s depth. The crowd will surge after every Cougar crease. The Utes answer with a counter step, a split-zone bluff, and another clean five.

I’m locked in on Utah. The Utes carry the cleaner trench advantage and the more multiple run game. They own the motion edge and the sack threat that flips possessions. BYU’s toughness will keep this cauldron boiling, but efficiency wins sprints and marathons.

Final score projection: Utah 27, BYU 20.

Best bet: Utah -3.5 (-110) at BYU
