South Alabama Jaguars vs. Arkansas State Red Wolves prediction, pick for CFB Week 8 on Tuesday 10/14/25

The Gulf air feels alive again. Fog rolls off Mobile Bay and hangs over Hancock Whitney Stadium like breath before a fight. South Alabama, bruised but unbowed, finally gets a night game that matters. Arkansas State drifts in at 1–4, hunting for oxygen, clinging to the notion that rhythm can disguise limitation. Both teams share the same restlessness—promise without payoff, flashes without finish—and only one gets to breathe easier when the lights fade. Below is my prediction for CFB Week 8’s game between the South Alabama Jaguars and the Arkansas State Red Wolves.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

South Alabama vs. Arkansas State prediction, preview

I’ve watched Arkansas State search for tempo all month. The Red Wolves average just 4.9 yards per play and 21.8 points per game, a formula that keeps them underwater in shootouts. They lean on quarterback Jaylen Raynor, who’s thrown for 1,451 yards and eight touchdowns, but the offense fractures when protection falters. The ground game offers little relief—207 rushes for 564 yards total, a weak 3.3 yards per carry—forcing Raynor to chase balance that doesn’t exist. His top target, Chauncy Cobb, has compiled 406 yards on vertical outs and deep posts, but too many drives die on second down. Arkansas State converts just 38.9% of third downs, and when they reach the red zone, the aggression fades—only 13 touchdowns on 18 trips, good for 72%.

South Alabama plays with more heft and composure. The Jaguars are better than their 1–5 record hints; they’ve lost two overtime heartbreakers and outgained opponents in four of six games. Offensively, they hum with efficiency: 480 yards per game on 5.4 yards per play, scoring 27 points per game behind a front that moves bodies. Quarterback Bishop Davenport adds life to the scheme. He’s accurate enough to punish soft zones and mobile enough to extend every broken play. Against Troy he gashed for 105 rushing yards and three touchdowns, and that dual threat anchors the offense. The backfield tandem of Kentrel Bullock (496 yards, five scores) and PJ Martin (over 200 yards) keeps defenses guessing. Together, they’ve churned out 1,215 rushing yards on 269 attempts, setting up play-action that often freezes linebackers.

Defensively, South Alabama doesn’t dominate statistically—31.7 points allowed per game, 5.7 yards per play—but they’ve tightened situationally. The Jags have given up only seven passing touchdowns all season, showing resilience inside the twenty. Their third-down defense (just 40% conversions allowed) forces opponents into long possessions, then the offense steals the rhythm back with that run-heavy tempo. Linebacker Quinton Wilfawn and edge rusher Wyatt Sullivan lead a front that’s logged eight sacks, but more important, they’ve collapsed pockets that ruin timing. That’s trouble for an Arkansas State line already leaking pressures.

Arkansas State vs. South Alabama pick, best bet

Critics cling to Arkansas State’s 31–30 win over Texas State as a sign of life. They’ll point to Raynor’s 248 yards and two touchdowns that day, to the flashes from Corey Rucker (102 yards on eight catches). They’ll say South Alabama’s 1–5 mark cancels any advantage. But metrics tell a colder truth. Arkansas State’s defense allows 7.1 yards per play and 32 points per game—one of the poorest marks in the conference. They’ve given up 17 rushing touchdowns, and their missed-tackle rate sits near 13%. That’s the exact weakness South Alabama feasts on. When the Jaguars lean into zone-read looks, they generate downhill force—Bullock’s contact balance, Davenport’s legs, and a line that averages 5.4 yards per carry together stretch defenses until they break. Arkansas State’s front hasn’t shown the depth or gap integrity to withstand that for sixty minutes.

Market sentiment leans toward the home side. The line opened South Alabama –7.5, total 59.5, and bettors immediately nudged the number upward. That total reflects trust in offensive tempo rather than proven execution—both teams average around 51 combined points per game, so 60.5 feels inflated. Mobile’s weather will be clear, 70°F, no wind, meaning the field stays fast. The Jaguars are 3–0 straight up at home and 2–0 ATS, while Arkansas State remains winless away from Jonesboro. Expect South Alabama to dictate pace through early clock control, bleeding possessions until Arkansas State presses. The under makes sense if the Jaguars stay committed to the ground game; their long drives suffocate volume.

The difference-maker should be Davenport’s mobility. I expect him to split the Red Wolves in the second quarter—one scramble for twenty, another for a touchdown. His improvisation forces linebackers to hesitate, opening slants for Javon Ivory, who will exploit single coverage. Once South Alabama’s play-calling hits rhythm, they’ll own possession. By the third quarter, that constant ground stress will crack Arkansas State’s front. Bullock will finish a nine-play drive with a goal-line burst, and from there, the Jags’ defense pins its ears back.

Arkansas State’s offense can hang early but not long. Raynor’s precision evaporates under sustained heat, and without a run game to ease pressure, every series grows frantic. South Alabama’s composure—its patience in rhythm—wins out. I see them scoring on half their drives, holding A-State under 300 total yards, and controlling time of possession by nearly ten minutes.

Final Score: South Alabama 31, Arkansas State 17. South Alabama should roll this one.

Best bet: South Alabama -7.5 (-105) vs. Arkansas State
