Purdue Boilermakers vs. Illinois Fighting Illini prediction, pick for CFB Week 6 on Saturday 10/4/25

Ross-Ade stands tall in October, its bleachers tight with the weight of history. Illinois arrives ranked and sharpened by an emotional win over USC, one week removed from that Bloomington humiliation that still lingers like a scar. Purdue comes off a bye with two bruises, Notre Dame and USC both scoring in bunches, the Boilers still searching for defensive poise. The spread sits at Illinois -8.5 with a total of 55.5 on DraftKings, a number that tempts with points but frames the Illini as road favorites expected to separate. Below is my prediction for CFB Week 6’s game between the Purdue Boilermakers and the Illinois Fighting Illini.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

Purdue vs. Illinois prediction, preview

Luke Altmyer has become the axis of this Illinois offense. He’s completed 71.4% for 1,183 yards and 11 touchdowns without a turnover, his passer rating hovering near 180. Against USC he hit 20 of 26 for 328 yards, two touchdowns, and added a rushing score, a performance that erased Indiana’s shadow. He steers a unit averaging 242.6 passing yards and 133.4 rushing yards per game, and that balance breathes inside the red area with 22 touchdowns through five games. Hank Beatty has carved 383 yards on 27 catches, while Collin Dixon has two touchdowns and a 17.2-yard average, their combined separation stressing every coverage shell. Kaden Feagin adds ballast with 300 rushing yards at 4.3 per carry, and Justin Bowick’s red-zone presence has meant four touchdowns. The Illini average 35.8 points, 21st nationally, and convert 0.6 points per play, top-15 in the country. They have protected the ball—only three giveaways—and sit at +5 in turnover margin with eight takeaways, a profile reinforced by a 100.0% fourth-down conversion rate and 20.0 second-half points per game. Their one offensive flaw remains protection: Altmyer has been sacked 17 times, a number Purdue’s front will circle, even as Illinois counters with 13 sacks on defense. The stress point lurks at the other end, too: Illinois has allowed 242.4 passing yards per game and a 65.2% opponent completion rate, with third-down defense conceding 44.4%.

Ryan Browne keeps Purdue afloat with volatility. He’s thrown for 1,036 yards and six touchdowns but also five interceptions, his 63.1% completion rate undercut by mistakes. He adds 77 rushing yards and two touchdowns, but nine sacks show a line still leaking. Devin Mockobee runs with effort but only 3.5 per carry, his 246 yards failing to tilt games. Nitro Tuggle flashes, averaging 17.8 yards per catch with three scores, while Michael Jackson III has been steady at 211 yards. The passing engine hums at 279.5 yards per game with 8.5 yards per attempt and a 45.3% third-down conversion rate, yet the ground game sputters at 109.0 yards per game. Purdue scores 28.0 points per game but ranks 120th in red-zone efficiency at 72.2%, a failing that won’t hold against Illinois’ turnover-hungry defense. The Boilers are minus-five in turnover margin and still searching for their first interception this season, even while the front has stacked 10 sacks to sit 11th nationally and the defense allows just 1.5 fourth-quarter points per game. The soft tissue appears earlier: opponents complete 65.3% against them, produce 6.1 yards per play, and have pushed Purdue to 370.3 yards allowed per game, including 157.3 on the ground—numbers that invite Illinois’ balance to seize control before the late clamps arrive.

Illinois vs. Purdue pick, best bet

The counter lies in Purdue’s pressure. They rank 11th nationally in sacks, with CJ Nunnally and Mani Powell both collapsing pockets, and Illinois’ line has already shown leaks. If Browne avoids giveaways, the Boilers’ passing game can stress Illinois’ secondary, which allows 242.4 passing yards per game, 99th nationally. Yet Illinois’ defense compensates with havoc: six fumble recoveries, third in the country, and four different players with sacks, Gabe Jacas leading with four. They hold opponents to 4.0 per carry and rank top-25 in rushing success rate defense. Against USC, they yielded 364 passing yards but only 3.7 per carry, showing situational toughness that could suffocate Purdue’s stagnant run game.

Illinois is 8-1 ATS in its last nine and 5-0 ATS as a favorite, while Purdue is 4-11 ATS across its last fifteen and 2-13 straight up in its last fifteen overall. Illinois games have gone over in four of their last five on the road, while Purdue has trended under at Ross-Ade. Yet the key mismatch is efficiency: Illinois has scored 22 touchdowns on 100 first downs, while Purdue has 18 touchdowns but six interceptions. The Illini’s +5 turnover margin contrasts with Purdue’s -5, a ten-possession swing through five games. Projection models show Illinois scoring into the mid-30s, Purdue stalling in the low-20s, a split that matches the spread’s intent.

I see this as a runaway for Illinois. Altmyer’s poise and downfield accuracy will punish Purdue’s secondary if given rhythm, and Beatty’s route sharpness should carve separation against corners yielding 65% completions. Feagin’s consistency on duo and zone concepts will test a defense surrendering 157.3 rushing yards per game. For Purdue, Tuggle must rip an explosive play, while Mockobee must break his three-yard ceiling to shorten drives. Browne’s turnovers remain the pivot: one early pick tilts this toward a rout.

Illinois 34, Purdue 23. We lay the points with the Fighting Illini.

Best bet: Illinois -8.5 (-110) at Purdue
