The eighth edition of the Laver Cup gets underway on Friday. The best tennis players in the world will be competing for both pride and a huge cash prize in San Francisco, California.

2025 Laver Cup
The 2025 Laver Cup sees the biggest stars in Europe take on the biggest stars from the rest of the world. This is an indoor hard court tournament, with this year’s edition taking place in San Francisco. Team Europe has won five of the seven editions of the Laver Cup. However, Team World has won two of the past three cups. The tournament is a series of singles and doubles matches between the two teams. Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe captained the two teams for each of the first seven editions, but this year there is a changing of the guard. French tennis legend Yannick Noah will be captaining Team Europe, while American tennis legend Andre Agassi will be captaining Team World. Team World will be hoping to keep its positive momentum in the tournament going, while Team Europe looks to re-establish its dominance.
Team Europe Preview
This year, Team Europe is the more talented team on paper. They are led by the World No. 1, Carlos Alcaraz. Alongside him are World No. 3 Alexander Zverev, No. 11 Holger Rune, No. 12 Casper Ruud, No. 17 Jakub Mensik, and No. 25 Flavio Cobolli. Notably absent is World No. 2 Jannik Sinner, who has never participated in this event before. Alexander Zverev is the most experienced player in the history of this competition, making his sixth appearance. Both of Team World’s wins came in the two years that Zverev missed out on that team, making him a perfect 5-0 in this competition, the most wins of any player in history. Carlos Alcaraz is not only the best player in the world this year, but he also dominated at this tournament last year. Alcaraz set the record for most points in a single Laver Cup by earning eight points for Team Europe. He is likely to lead the way again this year.
Team World Preview
Team World is always the underdog in this tournament, but they have found a way to win two of the past three cups. The top-ranked player on Team World this year is World No. 4 Taylor Fritz. The American is accompanied by No. 8 Alex de Minaur, No. 21 Francisco Cerundolo, No. 32 Alex Michelsen, No. 42 Joao Fonseca, and No. 63 Reilly Opelka. Taylor Fritz is not only the highest-ranked player on Team World, but also the most experienced at this event. He has been a part of five Laver Cups, including both Team World victories. Team World is missing three players that were supposed to be a major part of this team: Americans Tommy Paul, Ben Shelton and Frances Tiafoe. Tiafoe would have been the most experienced player on the team, and the talent of all three will be missed. Those Americans missing due to injury only make Team World a bigger underdog than normal for this year’s event.
Laver Cup Pick, Prediction
Team Europe is the more talented team almost every year, but this year, they have a significant edge. Carlos Alcaraz is a massive X-factor as the clear best player in the world. All of Team Europe’s players are ranked in the top-25 in the world, while that can only be said for three of Team World’s players. They also have some very experienced players, with the 5-0 Alexander Zverev on their side, as well as Casper Ruud making his fifth appearance. One edge that Team World used to have was their doubles play. They had doubles specialist Jack Sock on the team for multiple cups, and Ben Shelton, Frances Tiafoe and Nick Kyrgios were all high-level doubles players on past teams. This year, Team Europe has the better doubles players between Zverev, Rune and Alcaraz.
My pick to win the 2025 Laver Cup is Team Europe. It’s hard to imagine Carlos Alcaraz dropping a match, while the experienced Zverev and Rune should help add to that dominance. Even when it gets further down the list in singles matches, Jakub Mensik and Flavio Cobolli had much better seasons than the likes of Joao Fonseca and Reilly Opelka. The American crowd will be rooting for their players on Team World, but it won’t be enough to stop Yannick Noah’s team this year.
