Tulane Green Wave vs. Duke Blue Devils prediction, pick for CFB Week 3 on Saturday 9/13/25

Yulman Stadium will be loud Saturday night, and the script couldn’t be better. Tulane sits unbeaten at 2-0 after pounding Northwestern and escaping South Alabama, leaning on a balanced rushing attack and a defense that thrives on disruption. Duke walks in at 1-1, still buzzing with the story of quarterback Darian Mensah facing his old team. The ACC versus AAC stage, the revenge angle, and a spread inside a field goal give this matchup juice well beyond a typical September non-conference clash. With Tulane averaging 255 rushing yards per game and Duke airing it out for 372.5 per game, this one has all the ingredients for fireworks deep into the night. Below is my prediction and pick for College Football Week 3’s game between the Tulane Green Wave and the Duke Blue Devils.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

Tulane vs. Duke prediction, preview

New Orleans is getting a track meet with plot twists. Duke arrives throwing on 65.4% of snaps with an offense graded 18th and a passing unit carrying an 88.2 PFF grade; Tulane counters with a bruising run game, a defense that hunts the ball, and an overall power rank of 29th.

Start with cadence and explosives. Duke’s +0.14 EPA per pass and +0.19 EPA per run signal balance even in a pass-first structure, and the Blue Devils still hit chunk shots when the pocket is clean (125.3 passer rating) and don’t crater when it’s not (101.8 under pressure). Quarterback Darian Mensah is scorching: 723 yards on 73.5% with five touchdowns to one interception, a 6.02% big-time throw rate, and three wideouts already humming—Cooper Barkate nine for 205 yards (102.5 YPG), Andrel Anthony eight for 109 and three scores (54.5 YPG), and Sahmir Hagans eight for 87 and two touchdowns. Tulane’s pass defense is opportunistic, but it just allowed 9.6 yards per attempt in its latest outing and now faces a tempo outfit that still averages 65.0 snaps with real air yards.

Tulane wins differently, and that’s why the scoreboard climbs. The Green Wave run it on 53.0% of snaps, stack 75.5 plays a game, and lean on quarterback Jake Retzlaff for both structure and chaos—277 passing yards on 56.4% with two touchdowns and no picks, plus 177 rushing yards with two rushing scores (88.5 rushing YPG). The backs are efficient: Zuberi Mobley at 100 yards, 6.3 YPC, and two touchdowns; Javin Gordon at 104 yards and 5.2 YPC. Tulane’s efficiency splits say “keep handing it off” (+0.08 EPA per rush), but Duke’s front also invites some second-reaction offense—defensive lineman Vincent Anthony Jr. has nine tackles, 4.0 TFL, and four sacks already, so Retzlaff’s legs become the counterpunch that extends drives and juices total plays.

Duke vs. Tulane pick, best bet

Duke’s passing profile dwarfs Tulane’s (-0.03 EPA per pass, 70.2 passing grade; 86.5 clean-pocket rating; 72.2 under pressure; 0.00% big-time throws), but Tulane flips that script with volume and short fields from a defense that creates havoc. The Green Wave second level is everywhere—linebacker Dickson Agu 15 tackles; safety Jack Tchienchou 15 tackles with a TFL and a sack; corner Javion White already at two interceptions—and those takeaways compress fields into quick scores either way. Meanwhile Duke’s defense is fast but still bedding in on the back end, and the snaps add up when your opponent lives at 75.5 per game.

Strength-of-schedule explains the near-pick spread (Duke SOS 70th, Tulane 32nd), but not the scoring upside when you combine Duke’s aerial efficiency with Tulane’s snap volume and QB run game.

Personnel notes keep the case intact. For Duke: linebackers Kendall Johnson (11 tackles, 2 TFL, 1 sack), Nick Morris Jr. (10 tackles, three TFL), and Tre Freeman (10 tackles, two TFL, 0.5 sack) clean up but will be stressed horizontally by Retzlaff’s keepers and RPOs. For Tulane: tight end Justyn Reid gives a reliable outlet (4 for 52 and a touchdown), while defensive lineman Santana Hoppe and that secondary’s ball skills can both gift and surrender explosives—exactly the volatility an Over needs.

I respect Tulane’s 39th-rated defense and red-area teeth, and I respect Duke’s 8th-rated defense on paper, but the on-field profiles say pace plus explosives plus short fields win out. Tulane’s offense at 255 rushing yards per game meets a Duke team that will answer vertically; the “middle eight” becomes a trading post for quick scores. With the spread fairly lined and the total shaded low relative to the matchup, I’m locking in the over on this total.

Duke 35, Tulane 31.

Best bet: Tulane vs. Duke o52.5 total points (-110)
