Naomi Osaka is looking to get back to the pinnacle of tennis. Osaka is the former No. 1 player in the world and a four-time major champion, two of those at the US Open. Osaka has had a tough couple of years to get back to this spot. In 2021, she took a break from the sport due to mental health issues. After that, she struggled with her game, then took another hiatus from the sport when she got pregnant in 2023. She returned in 2024, but had to work incredibly hard to get back to her old self. She has shown flashes of getting back to that level, but at this US Open, she finally looks like one of the best players in the world once again. Across five matches, she has only dropped one set, despite playing three ranked opponents, including No. 3 Coco Gauff. She is now just one win away from getting back to a Grand Slam final for the first time since the 2021 Australian Open.
Anisimova Prediction, Preview
Amanda Anisimova is another player who faced a lot of trials and tribulations to get to this point. She was considered one of the bright young players in the sport when she made the 2019 French Open semifinals at just 17 years old. However, she struggled to get back to that point and, due to mounting pressure on her, she took a break from tennis in 2023 to address growing mental health concerns. She returned in 2024, but basically had to start her career from scratch because of how far her ranking had fallen during her hiatus. But Anisimova did work her way back, making the Wimbledon Final earlier this summer. Just when it seemed as if her career had finally taken off, she lost 6-0, 6-0 to Iga Swiatek in the final. She was emotionally shaken and embarrassed to not take a single game in her first Grand Slam final. However, Anisimova has shown incredible fortitude at this 2025 US Open, dominating Iga Swiatek in two sets in the quarterfinals, getting her revenge from Wimbledon. Anisimova is now one win away from making her second-career Grand Slam final.
Anisimova vs. Osaka Pick, Best Bet
These two players both have incredible stories and have showed grit and reslience to get their careers back on track. During the 2023 season, neither of these women were even playing professional tennis. Just two years later, they are facing off in the US Open semifinals. Both are incredibly deserving of making the final, but, unfortunately, only one can make it. Naomi Osaka has never lost a Grand Slam semifinal. In her four career trips to the semifinals, she not only won all four matches, but has then gone on to win the Grand Slam title all four times. In her career, she has more experience in these big matches. However, Anisimova has the more recent experience, playing in a Grand Slam Final just 54 days ago.
My best bet is on Amanda Anisimova to win. Osaka has been brilliant in this tournament, but she has not had the same level of consistency this year that Anisimova has had. This year, Anisimova won her first WTA 1000 event, made her first Grand Slam final and reached a career-high world ranking of No. 7. These two have faced each other twice before, both times in Grand Slams, and Anisimova won both of those matches. She is on a mission to get back to another Grand Slam final after her loss at Wimbledon, and with the American fans at her back, she should be able to take down Osaka.
