CONMEBOL qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup continue on Thursday as Brazil hosts Chile. Each country has now played 16 games in South America, with Argentina leading the way with 35 points and Chile in last place with 10. The top six teams in the table will automatically qualify for next year’s tournament once the final matches are played.

Brazil sit in third place in the CONMEBOL table at the moment, trailing Argentina and Ecuador. They have won seven of their 16 games, drawing four and losing five. It hasn’t been up to the usual Brazilian standard so far, but they have still completed their ultimate goal of qualification after a 1-0 win in their last match over Paraguay. They will still be motivated to win and put in a good performance under new manager Carlo Ancelotti.
Chile have been mathematically eliminated from potential qualification, so in terms of motivation for this one, both sides will just be looking for a good performance to build on in the future.
These teams last played each other in October of 2024, when Brazil beat Chile 2-1 away in a World Cup qualifying match. In the last five games between these two countries, Brazil have won all five matches and kept clean sheets in four of the games.
Since their Copa America quarter-final loss to Uruguay, Brazil have kept a clean sheet in five of 10 matches. They will be looking to improve on that stat on Thursday, and I think they have a great chance at doing so as Chile have only scored nine goals in qualification so far, the second lowest total in CONMEBOL.
Brazil should be able to win this one without conceding, especially at home against a Chile side that are in turmoil, only winning two of their 16 qualification games so far.
