When Nick Chubb signed a one-year deal with the Texans in June, the thought process from both sides was likely that the former Cleveland Brown would be used as a depth piece behind Joe Mixon. Well, after the recent troubling injury news surrounding Mixon, Chubb’s fantasy outlook for the upcoming season has flipped on its head.
Mixon was placed on the Reserve/Non-Football Injury list recently, meaning he is not ready for the start of the season and will miss at least the first four games. That presents an opportunity for Chubb and the rest of this Houston backfield to start the season.
Chubb has had an injury riddled last two seasons, only playing in 10 games. So to be presented with a possibility to start, there could’ve been no better landing spot for the veteran. Especially when you consider the fact that the Texans have been a solid and consistent team in recent years, this is a great spot for Chubb to land. Houston will likely go by committee, but if Chubb can take the lion’s share of the touches and deliver early in the season, I don’t see why he couldn’t be fantasy relevant and a solid RB2 option until Mixon returns.
The Texans also have Dameon Pierce and rookie Woody Marks in the mix for touches. By no means is Chubb just going to be handed the starting job, but it seems like he will get the first crack at this opportunity. If he takes advantage of it, great. If not, the Texans will likely want to take a closer look at some of their other options. But in terms of possible landing spots for Chubb to make himself fantasy relevant again in 2025, this is as good of an opportunity as he could’ve asked for coming into the season.
With the health of Mixon in doubt and no clear cut backup option for Houston, Chubb is primed to make a comeback this season and launch himself back into fantasy football relevancy.
