For a long time, Cameron Young ($7,900; 148.5 FPTS) has held the unenviable title of “best player on the PGA TOUR without a win.” Young finally broke through with a dominant win this week at the Wyhdam Championship at Sedgefield Country Club. He finished the week at -22 after a -2 on Sunday, finishing six strokes clear of the rest of the field.
Young was playing his 94th PGA TOUR event and had posted an impressive seven runner-up finishes before getting his first victory. The win was his eighth top-25 finish in 21 events this season and moved him from No. 40 in the FedExCup standings up to No. 16 headed into the playoffs, which start next week at the FedEx St. Jude Championship.
The race to get into the top 70 was one of the biggest subplots of the week, but as it shook out, just one of the players who started outside the top 70 moved into the top 70. Chris Kirk ($7,200; 108 FPTS) moved from No. 73 to No. 61, while Byeong Hun An dropped from No. 69 to No. 72 and will not make the playoffs. Davis Thompson ($7,600; 91.5 FPTS) and Mark Hubbard ($6,900; 105 FPTS) both made a charge at the top 70 but came up just short.
Mac Meissner ($6,400; 111 FPTS) finished alone in second while Hubbard and Alex Noren ($7,200; 108 FPTS) tied for third. Kirk tied for fifth along with defending champion Aaron Rai ($9,300; 115 FPTS) and amateur Jackson Koivun ($7,400; 109 FPTS).
In the PGA TOUR $800K SUMMER SAND TRAP [$200K TO 1ST], an entry from dfeltens finished in the top spot with 647 fantasy points. Young and Koivun were the two key leverage plays in that top entry. Young was owned in just 6.5% of entries, giving his managers a huge boost. Rai was also in that entry along with Harry Hall ($9,200; 92 FPTS) and Denny McCarthy ($8,100; 98 FPTS).
Next week, the PGA TOUR will head to the FedEx St. Jude Championship at TPC Southwind in Memphis, Tennessee. It will be the first tournament in the 2025 FedEx Cup Playoffs, which will culminate at the TOUR Championship at the end of the month.
