The Mets have already upgraded their bullpen at the trade deadline, and now they acquire another meaningful bat as well. Cedric Mullins is a solid veteran bat to upgrade what is likely the weakest spot in the Mets’ lineup, in centerfield. Current Mets centerfielder Tyrone Taylor will now be relegated to a defensive substitute, with Mullins stepping in to be the everyday starter in the middle of the Citi Field outfield. Mullins is under a one-year contract, so this is just a rental for the Mets in their 2025 playoff push.
Mullins isn’t crushing at the plate this season, but his .433 slugging percentage and .738 OPS are both the best he’s had in a season since his All-Star year in 2021. After a slow start, Mullins has also started to catch fire over the past several weeks. Over his last 12 games, he is batting .308 with a .915 OPS. He will look to carry that positive momentum over to the Mets, who have World Series aspirations this season. Mullins also hits well against lefties, a weakness of the Mets’ lineup. He has an .866 OPS against left-handed pitching this season.
The Mets sent relief pitchers Raimon Gomez, Anthony Nunez and Chandler Marsh to Baltimore in return for Mullins. Nunez was the Mets’ 14th-ranked prospect, Gomez was their 30th-ranked prospect and Marsh was an unranked prospect. The Orioles will hope that at least one of Nunez or Gomez pans out as a viable MLB reliever. However, this wasn’t much of a return, making this a good deal for the Mets, who needed an upgrade in centerfield.
After all of these moves, the Mets have the fourth-best odds to win the World Series at +850, just behind the Phillies and Tigers.
