The Field

The Wyndham Championship is the last regular season event of the season. It’s a full-field tournament that will feature 150+ golfers and a regular cutline, where the top 65 players and ties will make the cut after Friday. This week is also important as only the top 70 players and ties in the FedEx Cup standings will get to play next week at the FedEx St. Jude Classic, the first leg of the FedEx Cup playoffs. Anyone outside the top 70 after this week misses the playoffs and will have to play the fall series to ensure full status for 2025.

A lot of top names are skipping this week (and resting up for the playoffs), but Jordan Spieth, Matthew Fitzpatrick, and Hideki Matsuyama give this event some star power. Spieth is only 50th in the FedEx Cup standings so he’s in need of some points and will certainly be under the gun this week to at least make the cut. Some other names on the bubble of the FedEx Cup this week include Nicolai Højgaard, Chris Kirk, and Keith Mitchell.

The Course

Sedgefield Country Club—Greensboro, North Carolina

Par 70, 7127 yards; Greens: Champion Bermuda

Sedgefield Country Club is a Donald Ross-designed course that’s hidden inside the suburbs of Greensboro, North Carolina, and has been the host of this event since 2007. Sedgefield isn’t long at around 7100 or so yards, and in past years it’s yielded some low scores—including recently in 2018 when the winner (Brandt Snedeker) shot 59 in round one. The greens are Bermuda (since 2012), and they can be slightly tricky, but it should be noted that as they have matured, scores here have gotten lower. Of the last nine winners, seven have now reached 20 under-par or better at this event. This is important to note as players with affinities for Bermuda grass tend to have a big advantage as the green complexes always yield some monster-putting weeks.

The course itself is a nice mix of semi-challenging holes and some extremely moderate-to-easy ones. As a traditional par 70, there are two very reachable and very birdie-able par 5s on this track, and any player hoping to be in the mix will have to play these two well under par for the week. Winners have tended to play these holes nearly a shot better than par for the week.

Eight of the 12 par 4s on the course measure in at under 450 yards in length and can be had for birdies by players going well with their irons. These holes aren’t drivable, and they do require accurate tee shots and place a large emphasis on short iron play. That makes Sedgefield more of a positional course and a big reason why we have seen so many veteran winners at this venue over the last decade or so (four winners of 40+ years of age since 2015).

As for how important iron play is at Sedgefield, four of the participants from the 2021 six-man playoff gained over 5.0 strokes for the week on approach, and the top three finishers from 2023 all gained over 4.0 strokes on approach. Last year’s winner, Aaron Rai, gained over 8.8 strokes on approach alone. Assuming you are capable of clubbing down and finding fairways, approach and putting are pretty much all that matter this week for the pros.

Other comparable venues with tighter fairways and Bermuda greens include Harbour Town Golf Links, Waialae Country Club, and TPC Sawgrass. Leaderboards at those courses are a decent starting point to see who might handle this week’s layout the best.

2025 weather outlook: The weather this week does have some thunderstorms and rain in the forecast the first two days and slightly cooler temperatures and slightly higher winds the last two days. It’s nothing biblical, but we could see slightly more difficult conditions than we’re used to seeing this season. Day 1 has some potential rain in the forecast for Day 1 early on but the afternoon seems a bit clearer. It’s posisble the later starters benefit a touch if they get clear skies and a wet course. Day 2 has light rain coming in most of the day but specifically the afternoon. Again, the early wave could benefit here if there are no stoppages. The weekend has winds getting up to 10+ mph in the afternoon on both days. As of now, I would give a slight edge to the PM/AM wave the first two days and also might look to target some earlier starters in daily lineups on Day’s 3 and 4.

Last 5 winners

2023—Aaron Rai -18 (over Max Greyserman -16)

2023—Lucas Glover -20 (over Russell Henley -18)

2022—Tom Kim -20 (Sungjae Im/John Huh -15)

2021—Kevin Kisner -15 (six-man playoff Kim, Scott, Na, Sloan, Grace)

2020—Jim Herman -21 (over Billy Horschel -20)

Winning Trends

  • Eight of the last 13 winners of this event recorded a T12 or better at Sedgefield CC before their respective victory here.
  • Of the last 12 winners of this event, only two have finished outside the top 15 in Driving Accuracy on the week (Reed 2013 and Snedeker 2018).
  • Six of the past seven winners of the Wyndham gained over 4.0 strokes on approach in at least one of their previous four starts prior to winning this event.

Winners Stats and Course Overview

Aaron Rai (2024—18-under-par)

Lead in form (T75-T4-T7-T2-T19)

SG: OTT—+1.4

SG: APP—+8.8

SG: TTG—+12.7

SG: ATG—+1.1

SG: PUTT—+2.6

Eight of the Par 4s measure in between (or very close) 400-450 yards in length. With plenty of shorter holes, the approach shot distribution tends to fall far more in the 150-175 yard range and 125-150 yard range.

Driving accuracy tends to be higher than normal, with the field hitting over 65% of the fairways in 2019; four of the last five winners here have ranked in the top 10 in driving accuracy for the week.

Winners stats:

  • JT Poston led the field in SG: APP stats in the 2019 Wyndham Championship and was second in driving accuracy as well; Glover led the field in DA and SG: APP; Rai was one of the leaders in approach and driving accuracy
  • 2022 winner Tom Kim was T4 in driving accuracy and led the field in strokes gained putting stats
  • Of the six men from the playoff in 2021, three of them gained over 5.0 strokes on approach for the week.
  • None of the last six winners of this event gained over 1.5 strokes around the green, but they all gained well over 2.5 strokes in putting and approach.
  • Staying consistent off the tee is important, but the need to hit a lot of greens and hit your irons close — and then have a great week with the putter — is paramount to success.

HORSES FOR COURSES

1. Webb Simpson (best finishes: win-2011, T5-2023, 2nd-2019) On top of winning this event in 2011, Webb has only missed the cut at Sedgefield once in his last 12 starts, and has finished T5, T7, T3, 3rd, T2 and 2nd in the past seven seasons. He quite literally named his daughter after this event (it’s true, her name is Wyndham Rose). He’s not coming in with the greatest form but did finish T22 at Colonial just a couple months ago.

2. Sungjae Im (best finishes: T2-2022, T6-2019) Finished runner-up at this event in 2022. Im has three top-10 finishes at Sedgefield since 2019 and finished T6 on his first go around the course in 2019. He’s struggled this year but will likely be eying this week as a good one to break out of his drought.

3. Si Woo Kim (best finishes: win-2016, T2-2021) Kim won this event in dominant fashion back in 2016, shooting a 60 on his way to a five-shot win. His love for the venue was on display again in 2022 when he finished T2 (playoff). Overall, he has four top-5 finishes at this event in seven career appearances.

4. Chesson Hadley (best finishes: T8-2022, T15-2021) Hadley has done well at elevating his game for the season finale. He’s finished T15 and T8 at this venue in two of the last four seasons and again enters the week in desperate need of some FedEx Cup points. He’s had a poor seaosn but could be a surprise rebound candidate at one of his favorute venues.

RECENT FORM

1. Matthew Fitzpatrick ($10,600; T4-T4) — Fitzpatrick is coming off back-to-back Top 5 finishes over in the UK. He’s been playing well across the board and certainly deserves to be the favorite in this weaker field.

2. Jake Knapp ($9,100; T4-T21) — Knapp gave it a good go last week, but came up just short and had to settle for a Top 5. He’s finished T22 or better in each of his last four starts, which includes two top 5 finishes now.

3. Lucas Glover ($8,900; T23-T5-T9) — Glover is a former winner at Sedgefield who enters with great form again in 2025. He followed up a T5 at the Deere and a T9 at the Travelers with a T23 at the Open. As a veteran with great approach play he sets up perfectly for this shorter venue.

4. Nicolai Hojgaard ($7,900; T19-T26-win) — Hojgaard had a nice couple starts over in the UK, finishing T4 in Scotland and T14 at the Open. His approach play has been solid of late and his ability to go low does make him a darkhorse for this week’s event.

5. Jackson Koivun ($7,400; T6-T3-T15) — Koivun is an amateur who has put together a couple of nice starts on the PGA of late, landing a T6 at the ISCO and a T11 at the Deere. The easier setup again this week make him someone to think about for large field DFS tournaments.

DRAFTKINGS DFS STRATEGY

Cash Games: Glover and Bezuidenhout good core plays

Lucas Glover ($8,900) is a pretty obvious play this week for multiple reasons. He’s got great course history as a past champ but his form is fantastic as well. He’ll be popular, but for cash games or core lineups he’s not someone I would shy away from at all. Christiaan Bezuidenhout ($7,200) has a little more risk attached but at $7,200 looks too cheap in this field given the setup. An accurate driver who thrives on these shorter point-to-point setups, he’s been hitting his irons well and had a solid finish last week in Minnesota. Rico Hoey ($7,300) is another name to consider in this range for core lineups as well.

Tournaments: Matsuyama makes sense

Matsuyama ($9,800) finished T16 at the Open in his last start and has struck the ball well in his last few starts in the States. He’s been having trouble off the tee, but the shorter, simplier setup and emphasis on accuracy may allow him to find some rhythem in that part of his game this week. Given that he has now won on two shorter par 70’s in Waialae CC and TPC Southwind, there isn’t much reason to think he couldn’t go nuclear for four rounds around Sedgfield this week either, especially with how well he has been hitting his irons. Further down, Kevin Yu ($7,600) stands out as a potential rebound candidate this week and should be lower-owned off two MC’s. Doug Ghim ($6,800) sets up well for this venue as well, as does Henrik Norlander ($6,500 – see below) and Harry Higgs ($6,300).

MY PICK: Emiliano Grillo ($7,500)

We saw an accurate ball-striker come in with great form and take down this event last season, and, at just $7,500 this week in DFS, I don’t see any reason why Emiliano Grillo can’t repeat Aaron Rai’s feat from last season in 2025. Grillo’s had a nice year already, racking up a playoff loss at the John Deere just a couple of starts ago, and a T19 at the US Open, his best ever finish at that major.

The Argentine has always been an accurate striker of the ball, and this year is no different. He’s currently 16th in Driving accuracy, 28th in overall approach proximity, and has now gained over 4.0 strokes on approach in three of his last six starts after last week. While he’s only played this event twice, he comes in this season showing confidence with the putter, having gained 2.9 stroeks or more on the greens in three of his last four starts.

At $7,500, he just looks like too good a value to pass up for DFS and makes for a great play to be overweight on, regardless of the format you’re targeting. For betting, his odds are as big as +7500 for an outright on the DraftKings Sportsbook, and, given the number of longshot winners this event has produced, there is good reason to think he makes for an exellent play in that market as well.

MY SLEEPER: Henrik Norlander ($6,500)

Norlander has been struggling with closing out his events, but, at the same time, he arrives at the Wyndham on a six-event made cut streak and is hitting his irons well. He gained over 1.7 stroeks on approach in Round’s 1 and 2 at TPC Twin Cities last week and has gained over 4.0 strokes on approach in two of his last four starts (Scotland and Detroit).

An accurate driver of the ball who comes in ranked 29th in Driving Accuracy on the season, he has had success at these shorter, point-to-point venues, having racked up multiple top 10’s at Sea Island and a top 10 at Waialae CC, which, like Sedgefield, are also both short Par 70’s. There is definitely a big bust factor with Norlander, who has struggled to hold his game together for four rounds, but he is hitting the ball well enough to put together a big week on a venue like Sedgefield right now and certainly needs points at just 112th in the FedEx Cup standings.

At $6,500, he’s a perfect kind of boom or bust value to use in large field GPPs for DFS and makes for a good ladder betting target in the top 10 (+1800) / top 20 (+750) department on the DraftKings Sportsbook as well.
