UPDATE (8/18): After a couple of weeks on the sidelines, Justin Jefferson will return to practice sometime this week per head coach Kevin O’Connell.
Per the Minnesota Vikings social media handles, HC Kevin O’Connell announced that superstar wide receiver Justin Jefferson is dealing with a mild hamstring injury and will not practice today, nor engage in any activity over the weekend. He’ll be re-evaluated next week.
This is obviously dire and scary news for a Vikings team dealing with major turnover at the quarterback position; sophomore quarterback J.J. McCarthy will be helming the offense for the first year.
We’ll provide updates here as we get more from the ground at Vikings’ training camp today & this weekend.
Potential injury impact
Jefferson’s presence is absolutely foundational for McCarthy’s development as a quarterback, as well as, really, the Vikings’ playoff hopes. Last year, Jefferson 103 receptions for 1,533 yards and ten touchdowns over 17 games. He owned the league’s second‑highest yardage total while redefining downfield prowess. His 30 percent target share and 67 percent catch rate made every look feel like a premium opportunity. He averaged 10.3 yards depth of target, consistently bending coverage schemes into open lanes. Pro Football Focus awarded him an 87.2 overall grade, sealing his reputation as one of football’s most feared weapons. His 14.9 yards per catch underscored his ability to transform every reception into a potential game‑changer.
Looking toward 2025, Jefferson enters the season armed with a four‑year, $140 million extension that cements his status as the game’s premier receiver. That contract doubles as motivation to chase all‑time marks, including a historic 2,000‑yard campaign. The Vikings fortified the offensive line and added pass‑rush anchors, ensuring Jefferson spends more time operating in rhythm and less time battling pressure.
