Chicago Cubs vs. Kansas City Royals prediction, pick for Monday 7/21/25

Updated:

By: Dan Johnson

Monday night’s opener at Wrigley Field pits the 59-40 Cubs (first in NL Central) against the 48-52 Royals. Chicago returns to home turf following a 1-6 setback in Boston, while KC snapped its skid with a 7-4 win. Nico Hoerner’s hit streak and Seiya Suzuki’s RBI inevitability power the Cubs, while Bobby Witt Jr.’s all-round impact fuels Kansas City. Below, I’ve got my preview, prediction, and best bet for this Monday night baseball game between the Cubs and the Royals.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

Cubs vs. Royals prediction, preview

Both clubs boast elite run production and pitching depth. The Cubs rank second in baseball with 523 runs scored and lead MLB with 512 RBIs. The Royals counter with a stingy 3.49 staff ERA—second-best in baseball—yet average just 3.4 runs per game. Tonight’s duel between Noah Cameron (2.31 ERA, 1.00 WHIP) and a Cubs bullpen opener signals a chess match where every run matters.

I see Cameron’s command slashing Royals opponents to a .230 batting average over 24 games. His 45.1% ground‑ball rate and sub‑1.00 WHIP punch through Wrigley’s eye‑level zeros. His 0.93 road ERA during his last three road starts underscores his road dominance. Facing him, the Cubs will cobble together a bullpen game behind Ryan Brasier’s 1.04 ERA and 0.92 WHIP. That Chicago pen rates 11th in ERA, but will need to thread a full nine‑inning tapestry.

Chicago’s offense feels owned by Cameron’s sinker‑grounders. Seiya Suzuki sits atop the almanac with a .545 slugging mark and 26 homers, yet he hits just .252 against southpaws this season. Nico Hoerner slashes .288 overall, but drops to .246 versus lefties. Kyle Tucker and Michael Busch each post wOBA splits nearly 100 points lower against southpaw arms. This isn’t just talent disparity—it’s matchup annihilation.

Some will point to Wrigley’s hitter shelter when winds blow out. In reality, tonight’s forecast calls for infield‑to‑outfield airflow at 8–10 mph. Wrigley’s 0.898 run factor this season backs low‑scoring affairs when breezes funnel in. Royals pitchers have a combined 0.883 home‑run park factor working in their favor. That suppresses everything from crowning dong fests to bloop rallies.

Royals vs. Cubs pick, best bet

Opposing counterarguments cling to the Cubs’ 32-17 home mark and deep lineup. True, Chicago slugs .447 on Wrigley’s turf. But against Cameron’s sequence‑punishing command, their hard‑hit rate falls sharply. Their power profiles dim when forced to chase his back‑foot slider. Bobby Witt Jr.’s all‑around 130 wRC+ and 23 stolen bases threaten, but he hits just .210 against righties this year. The Royals’ Vinnie Pasquantino owns a .214 ISO but drops to .172 ISO on the road: tough sledding at Wrigley.

The under is 8-2 in Cubs’ last ten games versus AL Central foes. Under sits at 7-3 in Royals’ last ten road games. Both bullpens carry sub‑4.00 ERAs over their past ten outings. Neither offense projects more than four runs against tonight’s pitching profiles and wind patterns.

Best bet: Cubs vs. Royals u7.5 total runs (-105)
