Arizona Diamondbacks vs. St. Louis Cardinals prediction, pick for Sunday 7/20/25

The Cardinals sit 51–48 in a tight wild-card chase, while the D-backs hover at 49–50 and hungry for more. Suarez’s 33 homers electrify the lineup, and Kelly’s 3.34 ERA anchors Arizona’s rotation. Mikolas must reclaim his form to stem the Diamondbacks’ momentum as these rivals clash in a pivotal finale. Below, I’ve got my preview, prediction, and best bet for this Sunday baseball game between the Diamondbacks and the Cardinals.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

Diamondbacks vs. Cardinals prediction, preview

First pitch unleashes Merrill Kelly, a 3.34 ERA workhorse with a spotless 1.05 WHIP. His 24.4 percent strikeout rate overwhelms 16.7 percent contact from Mikolas’s repertoire. Kelly’s 43.5 percent ground-ball rate neutralizes Arizona’s humidity and Chase’s modest 0.998 run factor. Opponents manage just a .206 average against Kelly at home, cementing his dominance.

Miles Mikolas counters with a 4.94 ERA and 1.29 WHIP, gifting extra traffic on the bases. He surrenders 1.45 homers per nine, while Kelly allows just 1.01. Mikolas’s 38 percent grounders leak through in hitter-friendly parks. His recent nine-start ERA of 6.04 confirms acute form breakdown. Cardinals starters have posted a brutal 7.64 ERA over their last 14 games. Their road bullpen bleeds runs at a 4.64 ERA.

Arizona’s pen holds a 3.59 ERA across its past 24 games. That split transforms this into a mismatch beyond the rotation. Eugenio Suarez screams power—33 homers and .548 slugging against this staff. His four-game hit streak arrives at prime time. Corbin Carroll adds speed and a .559 slugging mark in clutch moments. Their combined wRC+ sits well above league average, electrifying a lineup that averages 5.2 runs per game.

Some will argue the Cardinals’ veteran depth can counter this surge. They’ll cite Brendan Donovan’s .294 average. They’ll praise Alec Burleson’s power potential. They overlook a 15–19 run-line failure rate on the road against righty starters. They ignore St. Louis’s .236 batting line over their last 24 games. They forget Arizona racks up .253 at home. They bypass monumental splits favoring Kelly.

Cardinals vs. Diamondbacks pick, best bet

Weather remains irrelevant under Chase’s closed roof. No wind drags fly balls back to earth. No rain delays momentum. Conditions lock in Kelly’s pitch shapes. Chase’s humidor has tamed longballs, leaving hard contact the primary threat—one Kelly defuses routinely. Mikolas, prone to hard contact and fly balls, cracks under these same controls.

Head-to-head trends escalate certainty. Arizona covers the run line in four of its last five home games versus St. Louis. Kelly owns right-handed sluggers to a sub-.180 average this season. Mikolas yields a .266 opponent average since mid-June. That contrast tilts dang-near every metric toward Arizona.

Odds shifts confirm smart money flowing on the Diamondbacks. Sharp action moved Arizona from around -140 to -155. Seems faith in the Cardinals has brought it back down a bit to around -145. The books still respect Kelly’s value. The public may underestimate St. Louis’s decline. ATS records reflect that disparity—11-13 for Arizona at home when favored.

I deliver my pick with absolute conviction: Arizona -1.5 at +143. This line carries irresistible value. Kelly’s elite command, Arizona’s superior bullpen, St. Louis’s faltering starters, and punishing matchup splits converge into mathematical inevitability.

Best bet: Diamondbacks -1.5 (+145) vs. Cardinals
