This is a look at the best bets to consider for the first touchdown scorer market for NFL Week 1.
NFL Week 1 First Touchdown Scorers
Eagles vs. Cowboys: Jalen Hurts First TD (+500)
The defending Super Bowl champions open the NFL season on Thursday Night Football against the Cowboys. After an offseason where teams attempted to make the “tush push” illegal, it would only be fitting if the first touchdown of the year came on a “tush push.” Between the “tush push” and the athletic scrambling ability of Hurts, he has become one of the most reliable touchdown scorers in all of football. Hurts tied for fifth in the NFL in rushing touchdowns last season with 14. That’s one more touchdown than his teammate Saquon Barkley, who won Offensive Player of the Year. Hurts scored the first touchdown of the Super Bowl and has a great chance to score the first touchdown in this game, where they start their defense of the Super Bowl.
Raiders at Patriots: Ashton Jeanty First TD (+600)
Ashton Jeanty is one of the most exciting players making his NFL debut in Week 1. Jeanty was the highest-drafted running back since Saquon Barkley, and the expectations for him are high. The Raiders’ offense should be much improved with the additions of Geno Smith at quarterback, Jeanty at running back and Pete Carroll on the sidelines, to go along with Brock Bowers, who had a record-breaking rookie year last season. Jeanty is a special back because he has a Marshawn Lynch quality of being simply impossible to bring down. Hopefully, to start this season, Pete Carroll doesn’t make the same mistake he did with Lynch and hands the ball off to Jeanty when the Raiders get close to the end zone. Jeanty scored an absurd 29 touchdowns last season at Boise State, and would love to start his first NFL game by scoring the first touchdown against the Patriots.
Lions at Packers: Amon-Ra St. Brown First TD (+800)
Amon-Ra St. Brown came into the league the same year that Goff came to Detroit. The two instantly formed a connection, and St. Brown has been his go-to guy ever since. Over the last two seasons, specifically, St. Brown has become a prolific touchdown scorer. He has 22 receiving touchdowns over the past two seasons, the third-most in the NFL during that stretch. The Lions and Packers will be competing for the NFC North, and this should be an exciting game between the two rivals. St. Brown will look to start the season strong by finding the end zone to start this big game. This game will be at Lambeau Field, a venue where St. Brown managed to find the end zone when the Lions last played there. Amon-Ra St. Brown had a red-zone target percentage of 59.6% last season. The next-closest receiver, Courtland Sutton, was at 47.7%. If the Lions are driving to start this game, St. Brown will be who he looks at to score the first touchdown of the season.
