The warning signs are blinking for Atlanta. They’ve dropped five straight and just got humiliated 10–1 by a last-place Athletics team that suddenly looks dangerous. This isn’t a trap—it’s a full-blown reversal. The A’s are surging at the plate, playing at home in a high-octane ballpark, and getting a manageable pitching matchup against a starter in freefall. Below, I’ve got my preview, prediction, and best bet for this Wednesday night baseball game between the Athletics and the Braves.
Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.
Athletics vs. Braves prediction, preview
Bryce Elder gets the ball for Atlanta, but that’s hardly reassuring. He’s 2–6 with a 5.92 ERA and hasn’t completed five innings in any of his last four starts. Over that stretch, he’s been torched for 22 earned runs in just 15.2 innings. His xERA sits north of 6.10, and his 1.61 WHIP is bottom-five among qualified arms. Hitters are slugging .514 off him, and lefties in particular are doing damage—left-handed bats own a .390 wOBA and a 1.021 OPS against Elder this year. That’s a problem against an A’s lineup with five lefty sticks and one of the hottest hitters in the league.
Lawrence Butler has exploded in July. He launched two bombs—including a grand slam—in the opener of this series and owns a .611 SLG this month with a 157 wRC+. Zack Gelof has added four extra-base hits in his last five games and is barreling up at a 12.8% clip. Shea Langeliers is mashing righties with a .792 OPS and 14 homers against them this season. And this isn’t a fluke week—the A’s are slugging .537 as a team since July 1, fourth-best in baseball. Their wRC+ during that span? 129. They’re not just hot—they’re dangerous.
On the mound, Mitch Spence gives the Athletics a fighting chance. He’s 2–4 with a 4.06 ERA, but his 3.77 xFIP and 1.19 WHIP suggest he’s outperforming expectations. His chase rate has climbed to 32% in July, and he’s suppressing hard contact on his sinker (.287 xSLG). He doesn’t miss bats at an elite level, but he limits damage and keeps the game under control. Against a Braves lineup that’s scoring just 2.4 runs per game in July, that’s more than enough.
Braves vs. Athletics pick, best bet
Atlanta’s offense is in disarray. They’ve scored two or fewer runs in six of their last eight games. Matt Olson is slugging .343 since June 15. Marcell Ozuna has just one home run this month. Ronald Acuña Jr. is out for the year, and it shows—Atlanta’s ISO in July is .107, down from .188 before his injury. This is a power-reliant offense stuck in neutral, and they’re running into a team that’s gaining confidence with every inning.
Sutter Health Park has played as expected this season—its park factor is 106, and lefty home run factor ranks top-10 in the league. That plays directly into the A’s current strength. Elder’s home run issues and poor command only magnify the edge.
This line hovering around even money is a market failure. Oakland has the hotter lineup, the steadier starter, the favorable matchup, and home-field energy. I’m locking in the A’s on the moneyline and leaning Over on the total.
Best bet: Athletics (-110) vs. Braves
