The coastal breeze won’t shield Dylan Cease from what’s coming. Petco Park may suppress homers, but it can’t neutralize a Diamondbacks lineup that’s barreling everything in sight. Arizona’s won five of its last seven and just dropped 19 runs in its last two games. The Padres return home from a grueling road trip with a taxed bullpen and an offense that can’t touch right-handed pitching—bad news against a Diamondbacks team that punishes righties relentlessly. Below, I’ve got my preview, prediction, and best bet for this Wednesday night baseball game between the Padres and the Diamondbacks.
Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.
Padres vs. Diamondbacks prediction, preview
Cease still brings the whiffs, but little else. His 4.62 ERA through 104 innings doesn’t scream frontline. He leads the league with 137 strikeouts, but it’s not clean work—he’s walking nearly 10% of batters and allowing a .321 xwOBA. His hard-hit rate sits at 42.1%, and his 1.27 WHIP shows how much traffic he lets aboard. Opponents are slugging .482 against his four-seamer, and that pitch location has been trending up—where hitters feast. He’s allowed three or more runs in six of his last eight starts, and his xERA (4.71) confirms the damage is earned. Arizona owns a .491 SLG vs. four-seamers in July—sixth-best in the majors. The Snakes don’t chase—they hunt.
Brandon Pfaadt counters with an 8–6 record and an unsightly 5.42 ERA, but the peripherals tell another story. His 3.93 xFIP and elite 21.6% K-BB% indicate a pitcher doing the hard stuff well. He’s dialed in the fastball command and has allowed only two homers across his last four outings. Petco is a pitcher’s park, but Pfaadt doesn’t need help: his first-pitch strike rate is up to 68%, and hitters have a .226 xBA off him since June 15. He’s getting ahead and dictating tempo.
Arizona’s offense is the reason I’m firing. Ketel Marte leads the charge with a 169 OPS+ and a 50.2% hard-hit rate. Josh Naylor is smashing left and right with 28 extra-base hits since June and a .380 xwOBA. Eugenio Suárez owns a .876 OPS with 28 homers and sits top 15 in barrel rate. Corbin Carroll? He’s slashing .288/.376/.519 with 20 steals and an 11.3% walk rate—chaos engine at the top. The D-backs have a .786 OPS and 114 wRC+ against right-handers since June 1, fifth-best in baseball. This group doesn’t let mediocre fastballs slide.
Diamondbacks vs. Padres pick, best bet
San Diego’s counterpunch lacks pop. Their OPS vs. righties is just .698, and their ISO in those matchups is a deflated .128. Fernando Tatis Jr. is slumping with a .309 OBP and declining exit velocity. Xander Bogaerts is hitting .234 since June 1. The absence of Juan Soto has left a black hole in the middle of this order. Even at home, the Padres have scored three runs or fewer in eight of their last twelve.
Padres bullpen woes add fuel to the fire. Their July ERA is 4.91, and they’ve blown four saves this month alone. They rank 21st in strand rate and 25th in WHIP over the last 30 days.
Arizona is priced like a coin flip, but they’ve got the better lineup, steadier pitcher, and more momentum.
Best bet: Diamondbacks (+125) at Padres
