Philadelphia Phillies vs. Cincinnati Reds prediction, pick for Sunday 7/6/25

The Phillies, at 52-37, are locked in a fierce NL East race and hungry to build momentum after Saturday’s emphatic win. The Reds, 46-43, are clinging to contention but face a brutal spot against a surging home favorite. Philadelphia’s 8-2 record as heavy home chalk reflects their ability to pounce in these matchups. This is a pivotal game where one team pushes forward and the other risks fading fast. Below, I’ve got my preview, prediction, and best bet for this Sunday baseball game between the Phillies and the Reds.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

Phillies vs. Reds prediction, preview

Zack Wheeler has been an unstoppable force this season, and today’s matchup gives him a chance to dominate again. His 2.27 ERA, 0.91 WHIP, and 32.9% strikeout rate aren’t just impressive—they’re elite. Opponents are hitting just .181 against him at home. The Reds are walking into a buzzsaw. Burns brings velocity, but he’s been a disaster at this level. His 14.12 ERA and 2.55 WHIP in 5.1 MLB innings are unplayable against this Phillies lineup. He’s surrendering 19.4 hits per nine innings. That’s batting practice for Philadelphia’s hitters.

The Phillies’ offense doesn’t just make contact—they inflict damage. They’re hitting .277 at home with a .330 OBP. They’ve scored nearly five runs per game in this park. Their ability to pressure pitchers early will force Burns into uncomfortable counts. His first-pitch strike rate is poor, and that’s a death sentence against a lineup this patient and powerful. Philly’s bullpen adds further stability. Their 3.22 ERA over the last week reflects their recent sharpness. I expect minimal leakage late.

I know the counterarguments. Burns is a top prospect with elite stuff. But prospects don’t thrive on hype. They succeed on command, and Burns has shown none so far. His strikeout rate doesn’t offset the hits and walks he’s handing out. Even if he flashes in an inning or two, Philadelphia’s ability to adjust will shred him. The Reds’ bullpen can’t be trusted to clean up the mess. Their 32.7% inherited runner scoring rate means any jam Burns creates will become crooked numbers.

Reds vs. Phillies pick, best bet

The betting trends paint the same picture. Philadelphia is 8-2 to the run line at home as a favorite of -200 or higher. That’s a +5.5 unit return. The Reds? They’re 0-2 to the run line as a road underdog against elite starters this season. They’ve lost both by multiple runs. Wheeler has cashed in three of his last four starts against NL Central teams with a winning record. The Phillies have won the first inning in three of their last four day games against NL Central foes with winning records. They’ve led after five innings in seven of their last nine as a home favorite. The early and middle innings should belong to them again.

Weather helps our case too. Warm conditions with light winds out favor the Phillies’ power. Burns doesn’t keep the ball down. I see extra-base hits coming. Wheeler’s ground-ball lean limits Cincinnati’s ability to counter. There’s no reason to overthink this. I’m not laying juice on the moneyline. I’m locking in the run line at +100 or better. This is Wheeler’s game to control.

Best bet: Phillies -1.5 (-120) vs. Reds
