Zack Gelof was selected with the 60th overall pick in the 2021 MLB draft by the Oakland Athletics. The 6’2″, 205-pound second baseman rose through the minor league system quickly, making The Show in 2023.

He slashed .267/.337/.504 with an 8.7% walk rate, 27.3% strikeout rate and .237 ISO in 300 plate appearances. Gelof produced 14 home runs, 40 runs, 32 RBI and 14 stolen bases. The BABIP was .331, so Gelof did have some good fortune.

Last season, the regression fairies sprinked their dust, as the BABIP came down to .296, resulting in a slash of .211/.270/.362 in 547 plate appearances. The walk rate decreased to 6.9% while the strikeout rate increased to 34.4%. The ISO also fell to .151.

The expectations were high entering the 2025-26 season, but Gelof suffered injuries and was placed on the 60-day IL.

He has finally been activated and will make his season debut on Friday, batting eighth in the lineup.

Luis Urias had been playing second base, but he was placed on the 10-day IL after injuring his hamstring on Wednesday.
