Boston Red Sox vs. Cincinnati Reds prediction, pick for Wednesday 7/2/25

Fenway Park plays host tonight to a matchup with real stakes as the Red Sox and Reds battle in interleague action, after these two teams wrap up the suspended game from last night this afternoon. Boston enters at 42-44, trying to claw back toward .500 and stay relevant in the AL East race. They’ve lost seven of their last nine but showed signs of life in Monday’s 13-6 blowout win. Cincinnati arrives at 44-41, sitting just two games out of a National League wild card spot. They’ve split their last six but remain one of baseball’s grittier road teams, winning four of their last six away from Great American Ball Park. Both clubs are desperate for momentum as July heats up. Below, I’ve got my preview, prediction, and best bet for this Wednesday night baseball game between the Red Sox and the Reds.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

Red Sox vs. Reds prediction, preview

The Red Sox and Reds square off with two starters who invite offense. Brayan Bello brings a 3.41 ERA, but don’t be fooled. His 1.44 WHIP and 4.42 xFIP tell the real story: constant traffic, plenty of hard contact, and danger lurking. His ground ball rate (54%) helps, but Fenway punishes even small mistakes.

Nick Martinez opposes him, coming off his best start of the season. Don’t let that one outing blind you to the broader picture. His road ERA is an inflated 4.82. His xERA sits at 4.50. Martinez is in just the 20th percentile for strikeout rate and allows a .278 average to lefties. His 32% ground ball rate in two-strike counts ranks near the bottom among qualified starters. At Fenway, that’s a recipe for extra-base damage.

Boston’s lineup is primed to exploit those flaws. Wilyer Abreu leads the charge with 16 home runs and a .345 xwOBA against right-handers. He’s hammering fastballs and cutters, both of which Martinez leans on heavily. Trevor Story is hitting .293 with a .534 slug at Fenway this season. His 46 RBIs speak to his impact in run-producing spots. Jarren Duran’s .371 wOBA at Fenway and .353 OBP against righties put pressure on Martinez from pitch one.

Cincinnati’s firepower can’t be ignored either. Elly De La Cruz is in a groove, slugging .593 since June 9th, with 18 homers and 22 steals on the year. His power-speed blend is tailor-made for Fenway’s quirks. Spencer Steer’s .442 average and four homers across his last 11 games add another layer of danger.

The bullpens tell an important story too. Boston’s pen sports a 4.05 ERA, but has sharpened lately. Chapman and Weissert lock down lefties, holding them under .200. Cincinnati’s relief corps holds a stronger 3.78 ERA but has blown 10 saves in 31 chances. Late-inning cracks could turn this game wild.

Reds vs. Red Sox pick, best bet

The Red Sox are 7-2 in their last nine interleague games against losing-record NL teams. They’re 24-19 at home this year, leveraging Fenway’s 1.093 run factor. Cincinnati is 4-2 in their last six road games but still below .500 on the road overall.

The weather sets up perfect hitting conditions: mid-70s, light breeze, no meaningful wind impact. Both teams trend over. The Reds have hit overs in six of their last eight. Boston has done it in five of their last seven at home.

Best bet: Red Sox vs. Reds o9.5 total runs (-110)
