Another jam-packed MLB slate is on tap for baseball fans on Wednesday. The action begins with a battle between National League contenders when the Mets host the Brewers for a doubleheader. Later, the Yankees will attempt to bounce back against the rival Blue Jays. As a nightcap, Clayton Kershaw will attempt to join the 3,000 strikeout club as the Dodgers take on the White Sox.

Will Warren more than 4.5 strikeouts
The Yankees might be in a tailspin, but Will Warren remains a bright spot on their pitching staff. Over his last five starts, the rookie has posted a 2.86 ERA and 1.13 WHIP. Even more impressive has been the righty’s swing-and-miss stuff, inducing a 29.3 K% during that time. In his last time out, Warren tossed five shutout innings against the Athletics, notching seven punch outs.
Tonight’s matchup doesn’t exactly play to Warren’s strengths. The Blue Jays love to make contact, often preferring to slap a single rather than swing for a homer. As a result, Toronto ranks last in baseball with 6.72 strikeouts per game. Still, I’m willing to bet that Warren finds a way to reach this modest total. The 26-year-old has recorded at least five K’s in 11 of his previous 13 outings. Given the youngster’s track record, this feels like a reasonable pick to get us started on Tuesday.
Corey Seager more than 1.5 total bases
There isn’t much to write home about when it comes to Texas’ offense this season. The Rangers are averaging 3.77 runs per game, the sixth-lowest mark in baseball. Even the team’s highest paid stars, such as Corey Seager, have disappointed. Through 54 games, the shortstop is slashing .249/.349/.438 with ten homers and 23 RBIs. Those numbers aren’t awful by any means, but it’s not the All-Star-caliber production baseball fans have become accustomed to.
Recently, Seager has begun to look more like his old self. The slugger has pieced together a seven-game hitting streak, including a two-double performance last night. On Tuesday, the Rangers will face Orioles starter Tomoyuki Sugano. The righty has had his struggles against batters on the opposite side of the plate. Left-handers are slugging .469 this season against the Japanese hurler, compared to a .439 mark for right-handers. Given the heater Seager is on, he should find a way to secure two bags during tonight’s contest.
Hunter Brown more than 6.5 strikeouts
In a loaded American League Cy Young race, Hunter Brown is making a strong case to collect some hardware. Through 16 starts, the righty has put up a 1.74 ERA, 0.89 WHIP and 118 strikeouts. Houston’s ace currently leads baseball in ERA+ (232) and hits per nine innings (5.4). With numbers such as those, it takes a special offense to do damage against this future All-Star.
The hapless Rockies definitely aren’t set up for success in this spot. However, a matchup at Coors Field always has the potential for a shootout. With that being said, Colorado’s offense has looked downright awful regardless of the venue this season. At home, the Rox have struck out 9.49 times per game, second-worst in the league. A quick look at this roster shows there are barely any above-average hitters, outside of maybe Ezequiel Tovar and Hunter Goodman. An arm of Brown’s caliber should have no trouble fooling this group.
Mike Yastrzemski less than 1.5 hits + runs + RBIs
On paper, Mike Yasztremski’s numbers aren’t the most impressive. This season, the outfielder is slashing .244/.339/.382 with seven home runs and 27 RBIs. However, on a middling Giants lineup, the veteran still has a notable role. Unfortunately for San Francisco, things haven’t been great at the plate recently. Over Yaz’s last ten games, he’s notched an abysmal .135 batting average.
Tonight’s opponent, the Diamondbacks, possess one of the National League’s worst pitching staffs. However, starter Merrill Kelly has been as reliable as they come (3.49 ERA, 1.07 WHIP). The right-hander has had plenty of success in this spot, as well. Over his last three starts vs. San Francisco, he’s surrendered just four total runs. No Giants batter has more experience in this spot than Yasztremski, with 43 career at-bats vs. Kelly. During that time, he’s accounted for a lackluster .209 batting average with three home runs. A slumping hitter with a bad history against Tuesday’s pitcher? This looks like an obvious fade.
Clayton Kershaw more than 4.5 strikeouts
Clayton Kershaw is only three K’s away from becoming the 20th pitcher in MLB history to join the 3,000 strikeout club. In a nearly two-decade career, the southpaw is still a weapon for Dodgers manager Dave Roberts. Over 38.2 innings pitched this season, Kershaw has put up a 3.03 ERA and 1.19 WHIP. However, he’s only managed to produce 29 strikeouts. Unsurprisingly, the 37-year-old is on pace for his worst ever K/9 ratio (6.8).
Kershaw might not have wipeout stuff anymore, but he should generate more whiffs going forward. The veteran has logged at least five K’s in three of his last four outings. Expect that trend to continue tonight against a light-hitting White Sox squad. This season, Chicago is striking out 9.48 times per game on the road, the fifth-highest mark in baseball. On the cusp of history, Kershaw should deliver another spectacular performance tonight.
Max Muncy more than 0.5 runs batted in
Let’s stay in SoCal, where Los Angeles’ hitters will attempt to support Kershaw. On a lineup loaded with star power, Max Muncy remains one of the more dangerous Dodgers hitters. This season, the slugger is slashing .252/.377/.461 with 13 dingers and 55 RBIs. Muncy has been on a hot streak recently, scoring a run or RBI in each of his previous five appearances.
On an otherwise unremarkable White Sox rotation, Sean Burke has been a pleasant surprise. The right-hander owns a 4.22 ERA through 81.0 innings pitched. He enters tonight’s matchup following five innings of scoreless ball against the Diamondbacks last week. Still, the 25-year-old has been a different pitcher away from Chicago. In seven road starts this season, Burke’s ERA has jumped to 5.82. That’s a recipe for disaster against the Dodgers, baseball’s highest scoring offense. A red-hot Muncy should have several opportunities to drive in some runs during Tuesday’s inter-league matchup.
