Luke Kornet is 29 years old, 7’1″, 250 pounds and went undrafted in the 2017 NBA Draft. He’s played for five different teams in eight NBA seasons. He’s never averaged double-digit points or rebounds and has yet to play more than 19 minutes a game.
That said, Kornet is well-respected in the league and is one of the better backup options despite not being a modern-day big that spaces the floor. What Kornet does is set good picks, does work on the boards, finds the open man and protects the rim on defense.
The San Antonio Spurs would agree because they signed Kornet to a four-year, $41 million deal, per ESPN’s Shams Charania.
Victor Wembanyama is the franchise and has the center position locked down when healthy. But both Bismack Biyombo and Charles Bassey, last year’s backup options, are unrestricted free agents, so depth was sorely needed.
The Spurs filled that void in great fashion, as Kornet has championship experience and should fit seamlessly on both offense and defense.
