Interleague in the AL West! Both clubs have traded haymakers this series, combining for 34 runs across two wild games. The stakes are sharp: Washington claws for momentum to salvage a brutal road swing, while Los Angeles eyes a statement win to stay alive in the AL West race. Below, I’ve got my preview, prediction, and best bet for this Sunday baseball game between the Angels and the Nationals.
Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.
Angels vs. Nationals prediction, preview
The Nationals and Angels both enter today with shaky starters and even shakier bullpens, and I’m ready to attack the over. Jack Kochanowicz takes the mound for Los Angeles with a 5.49 ERA and 1.55 WHIP across 82.2 innings. Opponents hit .296 against him the first time through the order, among the worst marks in the league. Kochanowicz has been brutal at home, with a 5.40 ERA and .309 opponent batting average. His 7.0% strikeout rate against left-handed batters is rock-bottom for any qualified starter. That sets the stage for James Wood to shine. Wood’s .970 OPS against righties ranks among the league’s elite. His .553 slugging percentage is seventh-best among qualified hitters, and his 99.8 mph average exit velocity on flyballs speaks to his raw power. Kochanowicz has already surrendered 15 homers this year. That trend isn’t stopping here.
Mitchell Parker doesn’t offer much resistance either. His 4.59 ERA masks an expected ERA over 5.30. Parker owns a two-strike strikeout rate of just 32%—fourth worst in baseball—and a concerning 5.70 ERA on the road. His home run rate sits at 1.15 per nine, and he’s been getting hit hard by righties all season. Jo Adell enters locked in, with a .342 average over his last ten games, five homers, and a ten-game hit streak. Taylor Ward remains a power threat with 20 homers on the year. The Angels rank second in MLB with 124 homers, and their power plays especially well at home. Over the last seven games, the Angels’ .271 team batting average and 114 wRC+ against lefties underscores their current form. Their 20.1% chase rate during this stretch ranks lowest in the league, showing discipline that pressures pitchers.
Nationals at Angels pick, best bet
Neither bullpen offers much relief. The Nationals’ pen owns a 5.93 ERA over the last six games. That’s the worst mark in baseball during that stretch. The Angels’ bullpen is only slightly better, carrying a 5.17 ERA on the season and a 3.92 ERA over their last two weeks. Both groups have cost their teams leads late, and neither has shown the ability to slam the door in close contests. The Nationals have allowed 2.00 runs per game in late innings this season, highest in MLB. The Angels’ pen has a 10% walk rate, fueling additional scoring chances.
Betting trends back up the over. Washington has hit the over in seven of its last ten against American League foes. Los Angeles has seen the total go over in five of its last seven games overall. The first two games of this series gave us 24 and 10 combined runs, and the matchup today points toward another high-scoring affair. Warm, hitter-friendly conditions at Angel Stadium only add fuel to the fire. The Nationals are batting .294 over their last six games, producing 37 runs during that span. James Wood has hit safely in eight of his last ten games, while CJ Abrams’ .489 slugging percentage continues to pace their offense.
With both starters vulnerable, bullpens leaking runs, and power bats on both sides heating up, I see no path to a quiet game. Every data point screams offense.
Best bet: Angels vs. Nationals o10 total runs (-105)
