The 6′ 10″, 250-pound Naz Reid was a five-star recruit in high school and played one season in college at Louisiana State University, averaging 13.6 points and 7.2 rebounds while shooting 46% from the field and 33% from downtown.
He entered the 2019 NBA Draft, but was not selected, eventually signing a two-way contract with the Minnesota Timberwolves. He played 30 games with the Timberwolves and 16 games with the G-League-affiliate Iowa Wolves his rookie season.
Over the next three seasons, Reid became a fixture in the Timberwolves’ rotation but never averaged 20 minutes a game. He did score 11 points per game in two of those campaigns and the ability to stretch the floor was his main calling card.
After the 2022-23 season, Minnesota extended him for three years and $41.9 million, including a player option for 2025. Reid responded the following season, playing 81 games, shooting 41% from downtown and averaging 13.5 points, 5.2 rebounds, 2.1 treys, 0.8 steals and 0.9 blocks in 24.2 minutes a game. That earned him the Sixth Man of the year award.
Reid not only spaced the floor on offense, but he attacked closeouts aggressively and could get out in transition. The playmaking also matured over the years. On the defensive side, his length was definitely an asset while he was able to hold his own on the perimeter. The benefits of what Reid provided were magnified in the playoffs, when Rudy Gobert would often get played off the floor.
After a season in which he played 80 games and averaged 14.2 points, six rebounds, 2.3 assists, 0.7 steals, 0.9 blocks and 2.2 treys in 27.5 minutes per contest, Reid declined his player option for the 2025-26 season. Instead, Minnesota rewarded its star big man with a brand new five-year, $125 million contract, per ESPN’s Shams Charania.
The Timberwolves have made the playoffs each of the past four seasons, while losing in the Western Conference Finals each of the past two. They are primed to make another run and ownership is backing them. Minnesota was in the second apron of the luxury tax last season.
