This is the type of divisional showdown that sets the tone for summer. Detroit holds the high ground, but Minnesota’s desperate. The Tigers sit 51-31, flexing the AL Central’s top record and riding a hot streak at home. Their 28-13 home record isn’t a fluke—they’ve smothered opponents at Comerica with a 3.50 team ERA. The Twins enter at 39-42, trying to claw out of a hole with back-to-back wins. But a 17-25 road mark underscores their inconsistency when leaving Minneapolis. Oh—rain watch for the Twins game again! Below, I’ve got my preview, prediction, and best bet for this Thursday baseball game between the Twins and the Tigers.
Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.
Tigers vs. Twins prediction, preview
Detroit’s offense is humming right now, averaging 4.96 runs per game (fifth in MLB). The lineup’s .420 slugging percentage ranks sixth, fueled by 100 home runs. Riley Greene is scorching hot—he’s rocking a .299 average and a .529 slugging percentage. His 17 homers and 61 RBIs have carried this offense during critical stretches. His OPS over the last two weeks is a blistering 1.205 with four homers. That’s elite production against right-handed pitching, where Greene owns a .983 OPS.
Sawyer Gipson-Long gets the nod, bringing a 4.58 ERA and a 3.94 xFIP into his second start this year. His 1.08 WHIP highlights his command, though he’s averaging fewer than four innings per outing. Still, Detroit’s bullpen ranks as the fifth-best unit by projections—plenty capable of finishing what Gipson-Long starts. The Tigers have hit the First Five Innings Team Total Over in 48 of 80 games (+15.33 units), also.
Minnesota’s challenge begins with David Festa, who owns a 6.39 ERA and an ugly 1.61 WHIP. Festa’s 1.74 HR/9 rate and .303 opponent batting average spell trouble against a lineup that thrives on contact. His extreme flyball profile (33.6% FB%) is a dangerous fit against Detroit’s aggressive launch-angle approach. The Twins’ bullpen has collapsed lately with a 10.08 ERA across the last seven games.
Byron Buxton is the heartbeat of Minnesota’s attack. His 17 homers and .553 slugging percentage give the Twins their main punch. Buxton’s three-game hitting streak features two homers and a .286 average. But beyond Buxton, Minnesota’s lineup feels outgunned against a Detroit staff that allows just 3.90 runs per game. The Tigers’ .987 fielding percentage (12th) adds another edge in preventing extra chances.
Twins vs. Tigers pick, best bet
Detroit’s recent form matters here—they’ve scored 28 runs in their last four games and have gone over the total in 10 of 12. Minnesota has dropped 11 of 14 and looks shaky away from Target Field. The Tigers are 9-2 in their last 11 Friday games and have covered the run line in six straight AL Central night games after home wins.
Forget the noise about Festa bouncing back. The advanced metrics don’t lie. Detroit’s power, patience, and bullpen advantage will break this open. I’m backing the Tigers -1.5 on the run line with conviction. The home dominance, offensive momentum, and Minnesota’s unraveling staff make this the play.
Best bet: Tigers -1.5 (+160) vs. Twins
