This is one of those otherwise nondescript mid-summer games that sneaks up and punches you in the mouth. San Diego and Washington wrap their series at Petco with a day game that feels sneaky volatile, and sneaky important re. momentum, especially with Nick Pivetta and MacKenzie Gore going. Below, I’ve got my preview, prediction, and best bet for this Wednesday night baseball game between the Padres and the Nationals.

Padres vs. Nationals prediction, preview
Pivetta’s been stingy with a 1.08 WHIP and 9.7 K/9, and he thrives in splits against lefties, cranking up a 30% CSW% and setting up whiffs with that nasty curveball. That matters today because the Nationals will roll out six lefties, all swinging at 26th-ranked wOBA against right-handers. Washington is a top-five team in strikeouts this season, so there’s a ton of swing-and-miss on tap.
And the Nats’ offense? Sure, they’re middle of the pack with 4.29 runs per game, but they lean on James Wood and CJ Abrams to manufacture big hits far too much. As evidenced by this whole series. Wood is scorching with a 1.102 OPS over his last 15 games and 63 RBI to lead this team. Abrams has raked too with a 123 wRC+ against right-handers in June. Even Luis Garcia has quietly posted a 139 wRC+ against righties this past month, providing sneaky protection behind those top bats. They can do damage, but it’s also an offense that strikes out nearly 25% of the time against right-handers on the road.
Meanwhile, the Padres hit Petco tonight powered by a potent top four of Fernando Tatis Jr., Manny Machado, Luis Arraez, and Xander Bogaerts. Machado is on an absolute tear—.356/.420/.560 in June with a 165 wRC+ — and Tatis Jr. is forcing pitchers to stay honest with a .262 ISO this year. Arraez and Bogaerts give them a high-contact floor, and Petco suppresses home runs, which plays perfectly into San Diego’s gap-to-gap style. Even Sheets, slotted in the bottom third, is slashing a sneaky .285 with 12 homers. This is a balanced, disciplined lineup that grinds.
That offense is going to support Pivetta too, especially because MacKenzie Gore’s peripherals scream regression. The left-hander’s 3.19 ERA masks a 4.24 xFIP and a 9.1% walk rate. San Diego’s patient bats will force him into the zone, and his .332 xwOBA on the road is begging to be punished. Petco plays friendly to pitchers, sure, but Gore’s HR/9 inflates to 1.24 away from home, and Machado and Tatis will jump all over that.
Nationals vs. Padres pick, best bet
And don’t sleep on the bullpen factor. San Diego’s pen ranks top-five with a 3.32 ERA and 73.5% strand rate; Robert Suarez and Jason Adam can lock the door. Washington’s middle relief sits 23rd in ERA and hemorrhages walks at 3.8 per nine innings — they’ll collapse if this game stretches into the sixth and seventh.
There’s a counterargument that Gore’s strikeout stuff can silence this San Diego lineup. But this Padres team is 7-2 over their last nine against left-handed starters and posts a .328 OBP in those games. Combine that with Pivetta’s 0.98 WHIP at Petco this season and the Nats’ road scoring average under 4 per game, and the edge is clear.
The weather will help, too. It’s a mild 70 degrees with light winds blowing in—perfect to keep Gore’s fly-ball mistakes in the park. The Padres’ aggressive baserunning and gap power will shine here.
Pivetta is going to clear 5.5 Ks because the Nats swing-and-miss rate against right-handers is a juicy 26%. The Padres’ top order will grind Gore into deep counts and knock him out early. Give me the Padres -1.5 at +145 for the decisive bounce-back win and let Pivetta carve up this lefty-heavy lineup all afternoon.
