While the Guardians and Giants don’t come to mind as similar teams, they have more in common than you would think.
The small-budget Guardians have made a living off developing pitching talent. In the past 11 seasons, Cleveland has produced three different Cy Young winners and a plethora of quality starters to boot. Not to mention current closer Emmanuel Clase, who had one of the best relief pitching seasons of all time in 2024. Their defense is perennially great; of the 30 AL Gold Gloves handed out over the past three seasons, eight went to Guardians players.
While the Giants operate with more money, they have followed a similar model. The World Series-winning days of Tim Lincecum, Matt Cain, and Madison Bumgarner are gone, but a new crop has arrived, headlined by Logan Webb. Veterans like Robbie Ray and Justin Verlander have arrived in support. A defense spearheaded by Matt Chapman has quietly become excellent again. Now, Rafael Devers comes to take their offense to a new level as Giants fans dream of a return to the World Series.

If these teams are true to form, it should be a lovely pitching duel at Oracle Park.
Logan Webb, the league’s preeminent innings eater, will be on the mound for the Giants. It’s been arguably his best season to date. The former Cy Young runner-up is at 10 strikeouts per nine innings for the first time in his career and should eclipse 200 innings pitched for the third straight season. In his home park against a middling Cleveland offense, he’s well-positioned for another superb outing.
Gavin Williams, Cleveland’s starter, isn’t quite on Logan Webb’s level. To be fair, few pitchers are. He’s got a great fastball with strong extension that generates a lot of swings and misses. The walks are what haunts him; Williams has issued 39 free passes in 69.1 innings this season. Against a very up-and-down Giants lineup, his whiffs and solid hard-hit rate should be enough to keep them under wraps. I think San Francisco prevails, but in a low-scoring pitcher’s duel.

Overcoming this pitching will be a tall task for two mediocre offenses. Not only do the starters project well in this game, but Cleveland and San Francisco have two of the best bullpens in the league. On top of that, they have to play in Oracle Park, where fly balls go to die. That was on display Tuesday as three separate batted balls that would have been home runs in other parks fell short.
These pitchers also thrive at keeping the ball on the ground. With the quality of these infield defenses, a few rallies will die through double plays. That should be enough to keep this a low-scoring contest.
