Seattle Mariners vs. Boston Red Sox prediction, pick for Monday 6/16/25

Tonight’s matchup between the Mariners and Red Sox in Seattle could be a turning point for both teams. Boston is riding high, having won five straight, including a sweep over the Yankees. But their fortunes may soon take a hit following the trade of star DH/”3B” Rafael Devers, shifting their entire team composition for 2025 monumentally. Meanwhile, the Mariners, coming off a series sweep against Cleveland, look to build on their momentum. With both teams fighting for AL Wild Card positioning, this game is crucial. The stakes are high, and the dynamics are shifting in favor of Seattle, if only because of some slight stability. Below, I’ve got my preview, prediction, and best bet for this Monday night baseball game between the Mariners and the Red Sox.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

Mariners vs. Red Sox prediction, preview

So many storylines in the Majors today, and this one hurts. In a stunning move, hours after they beat the Yankees five times in their last six games, the Boston Red Sox shipped Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants for Kyle Harrison, Jordan Hicks, and two other pitching prospects. It’s absolutely a move dictated by ownership and not the front office, and it’s impossibly frustrating that systems of power driven by petty greed disrupt our ability to enjoy competitive sports. The Red Sox were just getting special again. I digress. Onto the game.

Logan Gilbert gets the nod for Seattle. The 28-year-old right-hander has been superb this season, posting a 2.37 ERA and 0.79 WHIP over 30.1 innings. Gilbert’s 37.6% strikeout rate this season is elite, supported by his 5.1% walk rate and a ground-ball rate of 51.5%. These metrics highlight his dominance and control, making him a significant force on the mound. Against a Red Sox lineup already dealing with injuries and now the loss of Devers, Gilbert’s ability to get strikeouts while limiting hard contact could be the difference tonight. His last outing before the IL was stellar, further boosting his confidence heading into this start.

Boston counters with Lucas Giolito, whose 5.45 ERA and 1.54 WHIP tell the story of a pitcher struggling with command and consistency. Giolito’s 40.2% ground-ball rate is mediocre, and his 1.36 HR/9 rate suggests he’s prone to serving up the long ball. With Seattle’s offense capable of turning mistakes into runs, especially at T-Mobile Park, Giolito faces an uphill battle. His strikeout ability is still there, but his inconsistency means the Mariners’ lineup—led by power-hitters like Cal Raleigh (26 HRs, 54 RBIs)—could capitalize on his mistakes.

Despite the Mariners’ offensive inconsistency, their ability to hit home runs (seventh in MLB with 90 HRs) and their patient approach at the plate (fourth in walks) could pose problems for Giolito. Seattle ranks 14th in MLB for runs scored per game, and they have the firepower to make up for their struggles in plate discipline. With J.P. Crawford hitting .296 and Julio Rodríguez providing dynamic bat speed, Seattle has enough to give Giolito fits.

Boston’s offense, while potent at times, has been sputtering lately. The Red Sox’s .253 batting average ranks seventh in MLB, but without Devers, their offensive firepower takes a noticeable hit. Jarren Duran and Trevor Story step up as the veteran contributors, but the loss of Devers—who led the team with 14 home runs and 57 RBIs—has left a massive gap in the lineup. Their reliance on fly balls (36.6% FB%) makes facing Gilbert, with his ground-ball tendencies, even more challenging. Maybe Narvaez will have himself another game.

Red Sox vs. Mariners pick, best bet

The Red Sox’s bullpen has been shaky as well, with a 4.27 ERA over the last 10 games. Despite a recent strong stretch, their lack of depth could be exposed if Giolito falters early, forcing them to rely on an overworked bullpen. In contrast, the Mariners’ bullpen, though far from perfect, has been more reliable at home (3.91 ERA).

Betting insights indicate that Seattle holds a clear edge here. The Mariners are 13-5 to the Over in their last 18 home games against Boston, though recent trends suggest a lower-scoring game tonight. With both starting pitchers leaning toward underperformance, I expect the Mariners to capitalize on Giolito’s struggles and outlast Boston’s weakened lineup. The under on total runs is appealing due to Gilbert’s dominance and Boston’s offensive shortcomings.

The Mariners should feast on this crestfallen crew, already exhausted before they flew from the East Coast.

Best bet: Mariners -1.5 (+118) vs. Red Sox
