UPDATE: Greene was scheduled for a rehab start on Tuesday in Triple-A, but he felt tightness and has been scratched.
Greene could now be out until August.
On Wednesday, Reds pitcher Hunter Greene was placed on the 15-day injured list with a right groin strain. In a corresponding move, veteran Wade Miley was signed to the major league roster.
Greene’s latest ailment represents a major setback for one of baseball’s most promising arms. The hurler had missed time earlier this season due to the same injury, forcing him out of action for most of May. Heath issues have been a constant narrative for the right-hander throughout his four-year career.
When healthy, few pitchers possess Greene’s level of talent. Since 2024, the 25-year-old owns a 2.74 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 242 strikeouts over 210.0 innings of work. Greene has allowed more than two earned runs in just two of his 11 outings this season. That includes last night’s start against the Brewers, in which the fireballer allowed only two runs. Unfortunately, his night was cut short after the fifth inning. After the game, Greene called the injury “frustrating”, per Mike Petraglia.
The injury is a blow to the Reds, currently fourth in the NL Central with a 30-32 record. Cincinnati’s pitching has been solid for most of the season, allowing the 12th-fewest runs per game to opponents (4.00). Still, lefty Andrew Abbott is the only other pitcher on the roster with an ERA lower than Greene’s 2.74.
Currently, the Reds have +750 odds of reaching the postseason on DraftKings Sportsbook.
