After five seasons, the Knicks have parted ways with head coach Tom Thibodeau, per ESPN’s Shams Charania.
The move comes just days after the Knicks were eliminated in the Eastern Conference Finals against the Indiana Pacers. It was the furthest postseason run for New York in over 25 years.
Thibodeau helped resurrect a previously dormant Knicks franchise, taking the team to the playoffs four times in five years. During his time as New York’ head coach, the 67-year-old compiled a 226-174 win-loss record (.565 winning percentage). In the playoffs, he won 24 of 47 games with the team. However, the Knicks were eliminated for the second straight year as favorites over the rival Pacers.
According to Charania, the Knicks remain “singularly focused on their pursuit of a championship,” believing “a new voice will serve as the focus for the organization’s next step.”
Thibodeau’s tendency to give starters heavy minutes has been a talking point throughout his 13-year head coaching career. In addition, his preference for defensively-minded players didn’t seem to mesh with Knicks stars Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns. An offensive scheme tailored heavily around the former often led to long stretches without ball movement for New York this postseason.
In making the move to fire Thibodeau, New York’s front office seems to be shifting towards a more modern approach on its bench. Right now, it remains to be seen who the Knicks are targeting as the 32nd head coach in franchise history.
A name that will likely generate plenty of buzz is Michael Malone, fired in April by the Nuggets. The 53-year-old won an NBA championship with Denver in 2023. New York could also look towards the college ranks, specifically at UConn head coach Dan Hurley. The two-time NCAA champion declined an offer from the Lakers last summer, but a move closer to home could make sense. Former Villanova head coach Jay Wright, currently retired, would likely be considered a long-shot. However, he did win a national title in 2016 with current Knicks players Brunson, Mikal Bridges and Josh Hart.
