The Mets have called up one of their highest-rated prospects, Ronny Mauricio. On Monday night against the Dodgers, Mets third baseman Mark Vientos seemingly suffered a hamstring injury, which is likely to move him to the IL. The Mets are filling his roster spot with the young Mauricio. Mauricio can play a couple of different spots in the infield if necessary, but he is most likely going to be a DH to start his MLB career. Mauricio did play 33 games in the majors at the end of the 2023 season, batting .248 and hitting a couple of home runs during that stretch. So, he has seen MLB action in the past, but it was very limited and almost two years ago at this point.
Brett Baty was called up by the Mets a few weeks ago, and he is likely to fill in Vientos’ role as the starting third baseman for the Mets. That would leave Mauricio as a bat that can come off the bench if the Mets need a run. However, Mets manager Carlos Mendoza should give Mauricio a chance to prove himself with a few starts at DH as well. Mauricio was raking at the Triple-A level, batting .515 with three home runs and eight RBIs in nine games played. Mauricio can’t be trusted in DFS lineups until it is clear what type of role Mendoza is willing to give him. However, he is a player to keep an eye on if he can keep his momentum from Triple-A rolling into MLB play. If he can find his rhythm at the MLB level, he could become the starting DH for the Mets and be a DFS sleeper over the next few weeks.
