UPDATE: X-rays came back negative on Christian Yelich’s hand following the game.
Christian Yelich was removed from today’s matchup against the Philadelphia Phillies with a right-hand contusion. The Brewers’ star was hit on the hand in his first at-bat of the game during the top of the first inning. He was officially replaced in the third inning by Eric Haase, who stepped in as the designated hitter.
The full extent of his injury is not known at this point, and the team will surely take all the necessary precautions with its star. This comes at a brutal time as the Brewers entered today on a six-game winning streak with Yelich responsible for a significant bit of the production. He had tallied five home runs and 12 RBIs over his last seven games, including a walk-off grand slam against the Red Sox.
On the season overall, Yelich is slashing .233/.314/.423. The former MVP has tallied 12 home runs and 39 total RBIs. After a slow start to the season, he has woken up and performed like the star player he has proven to be. Hopefully, this is not an injury that will keep him out for an extended period and he will be back in the lineup soon.
