The 2024 Masters has opened the second round, and Max Homa is the current leader at -7 as he plays the 10th hole. But his playing partner on Thursday and Friday in Tiger Woods is someone the rest of the Masters field is curious about, as Woods looks to become the first man to make the cut in his 25th Masters, which would set a record.
As of right now, Max Homa is at -7 and the sole leader. But with Scottie Scheffler at -6 already starting his second round at 1:42 p.m. today, there’s still plenty of chance for the favorite at DraftKings Sportsbook to put some distance between himself and the field.
How is the cut line determined?
The cut line at 36 holes is the top 50 players plus those tied at the end of that group. There used to be a rule that allowed anybody within ten shots of the lead to make the cut, but that was eliminated in 2020.
What is the projected cut line for the Masters as of now?
Final update: Thanks to some very poor play down the stretch, +6 ended up as the cut line for the 2024 Masters. That was still one too many for Justin Rose, Sergio Garcia, Justin Thomas, and Wyndham Clark.
But it was the line needed for Hideki Matsuyama, Rickie Fowler, Tom Kim, and Adam Scott amongst others.
Friday 5:20 p.m. It’s all but assured that +5 will be the cut line, with Thorbjorn Olesen and Russell Henley the bubble boys finishing up their rounds while on that score as of now. Viktor Hovland entered as one of the favorites, and as he plays No. 11 he’s at +6, so he’ll need to find at least one birdie on the easier nine of the track.
Wyndham Clark was getting plenty of pre-tournament buzz as well, but at +4 after 11 the conditions coming home will present plenty of challenge for those trying to hang on to the cut line.
Friday 4:30 p.m. The wind has kicked back up, and we’re looking at +5 being the most likely cut line. That’s good for Keegan Bradley, who is in the house at +5. But for Si Woo Kim and Tom Kim, they’re going to need some help as they’re finished at +6.
Tiger Woods at +1 will play the weekend for the 25th time, and the 24th in a row.
Friday 3:15 p.m. We’re starting to get a bit of clarity, as some less breezy conditions have the cut line at +4 70.9% of the time via DataGolf.
Tiger Woods is at +1 with two holes to play, so barring a disaster it looks like he will make the weekend. But Adam Scott (+5 thru 16) and Tom Kim (+5 thru 14) will likely need to find at least a birdie on the way home to make it to Saturday.
Friday 2:40 p.m. The cut line at +4 (48.4%) and +5 (50.3%) are the most likely options for a cut line as of now. Adam Hadwin and Vijay Singh are both in the clubhouse at at +4, so both will play the weekend. Singh at 61 years old becomes one of the rare super-seniors to make the cut at Augusta. But J.T. Poston is at +5, and he’ll need some help to make the weekend.
Tiger Woods is at +2 play the pretty-easy 15th hole. If he can find a birdie on 15 or 16, he’s got to feel pretty good about his chances to make the weekend heading into the more difficult 17th and 18th holes.
Friday 1:55 p.m. It’s looking easier to make the cut than ever. With Max Homa now back to a four-way tie at the top at -6, a stiffening Augusta National is drying out and getting tougher. +4 is now 47.1% to be the cut line, +5 is at 49.5% according to DataGolf. There’s even a 2.7% chance for +6 to be good enough to play the weekend.
There are 67 players at +5 or better, and another eight at +6 as of now.
Friday 1:30 p.m. DataGolf thinks it’s most likely +4 as of now, giving that number a 52.9% chance of being the score needed to advance to the weekend. There’s a 41.6% chance that it goes to +5 however. The chances of the field going low enough to force it to +3 are pretty small at just 3.5%.
Who is not projected to make the cut?
Tiger Woods is at +1 with eight holes to play, so if he can hang on he’s looking pretty good to make the weekend.
Denny McCarthy is in the clubhouse at +4, so he feels pretty safe as of now. Camilo Villegas is at +5 and finished with the day, so he’ll need some mistakes out on the track to have a chance to play the weekend.
Shane Lowry, Akshay Bhatia, and Sahith Theegala are amongst those on the course at +4 that will need to hold that score or improve it to have a chance to play the weekend at Augusta National.
