The field for the 2025 Memorial Tournament is stacked. Eight of the top 10 golfers in the world will feature. The only superstar not playing this week is Masters winner Rory McIlroy. The Northern Irishman has confirmed that he will be back next week for the Canadian Open. So who in this field will come out on top?
The obvious pick is defending champion Scottie Scheffler, but at only +280 odds to win, I would rather look elsewhere.
Matt Fitzpatrick To Win (+4500)
The name that has caught my attention this week is Matt Fitzpatrick. He hasn’t had his best season by any stretch of the imagination, but his game is trending in the right direction.
At the PGA Championship two weeks ago, Fitzpatrick contended for most of the week and finished in a tie for 8th. He opened with two rounds of 68, before finishing with consecutive rounds of 72 on the weekend. The week before that, he finished in a tie for 23rd at the Truist Championship.
Back-to-back starts inside the top 25 is encouraging, but now he heads to a course where he has had prior success.
The former US Open winner has finished inside the top 10 in each of his last two starts at the Memorial Tournament. In 2023, he finished at two-under-par, five shots behind the leaders in a tie for 9th. He backed that up in 2024 with a T5 finish, losing out to Scottie Scheffler by six strokes.
The best aspect of his game this season has been the driver, but in his last start, it was his iron play as he finished in the top 5 in strokes gained on approach. A similar performance with the irons this week would be ideal, as the small greens at Muirfield Village Golf Club are tough to hit.
At +4500 odds, Fitzpatrick is a solid bet, especially given his recent success at the course. If you want to lessen the risk, Fitzpatrick is +700 to finish top 5 (including ties) and +300 to record a top 10 finish (including ties).
The Englishman has shown he can win on tough courses in the past and will be hoping to get his first win on the PGA TOUR since the 2022-2023 season.
