Blue Jays 2B Andrés Giménez injury status Friday 5/9/25

Andrés Giménez got off to scorching hot start this season, endearing himself to Toronto after spending the prior four seasons with Cleveland. Giménez opened the season with a seven-game hitting streak with three home runs in the first five games.

Since then, he’s slashed .173/.240/.200 with a .027 ISO. He has stolen eight bases and his BABIP is only .216, so he’s been unlucky. Still, the hard hit rate is sub-30% while the barrel rate has only been 3.4%.

Then things got worse, as he strained his quad after legging out a bunt during Wednesday’s game.

On Friday, the Blue Jays placed Giménez on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to May 8.

Addison Barger was the substitute for Giménez on Wednesday, but it will likely be Ernie Clement playing second base for as long as Giménez is out.

Clement has accrued 101 plate appearances this season. He’s slashing .245/.273/.309 with a walk rate of 4% and strikeout rate of only 14.9%, but the ISO is a paltry .064. Clement’s career ISO is .107, so don’t expect much power from him. That said, he did hit 12 home runs and steal 12 bases in 452 plate appearances last season.
