All losses are not created equal in sports. For the New York Mets, the 8-7 loss to the Washington Nationals is going to leave a sour taste in their mouth every time they reflect on it.
After jumping out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning, the Mets extended it to 7-1 through six innings. The Nationals scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh and finished off the comeback in the bottom of the ninth.
Pete Alonso’s error sealed New York’s fate with the game tied 7-7. Luis Garcia Jr. hit a chopper to Alonso, who tossed the ball over pitcher Ryne Stanek’s head as he was running to cover first base. CJ Abrams scored the game-winning run from second base.

This also marks the second walk-off of the series for the Nationals. In the opening game of the four-game set, Washington produced a 5-4 victory on a ninth-inning single by James Wood that scored Abrams from first base on some impressive hustle.
Despite the pair of frustrating losses in the series, the Mets maintain the best record in MLB at 19-9. New York is holding +800 odds of winning the World Series on DraftKings Sportsbook and -700 odds of making the playoffs.
