Luke Keaschall is 6’0″, 190 pounds and bats from the right side. He was selected by the Twins with the 49th overall pick in the 2023 MLB draft. While he can play multiple positions, he’s primarily been playing second base in Triple-A. On Thursday, the Athletic’s Aaron Gleeman reported that the Twins will be calling up Keaschall to the big club after placing outfielder Matt Wallner (hamstring) on the injured list earlier in the day.
In his brief minor league career, Keaschall has shown great plate discipline, with some power and speed. Both the walk and strikeout rates have routinely been in the teens while the ISO has been in the .180-ish area. The batting average has been in the .280 to .300 range.
Last season, Keaschall hit 15 home runs and stole 23 bases in 464 plate appearances. The walk rate was 13.4%, strikeout rate was 17.2% and the ISO was .179. The slash was .303/.420/.483.
He did have Tommy John surgery in August but he racked up 58 plate appearances in Triple-A this season. The power has been middling, though, with a .087 ISO, but the plate discipline and speed have been maintained with four stolen bases, a 15.5% walk rate and 19% strikeout rate.
Both Willi Castro (oblique) and Carlos Correa (wrist) are currently injured, so Keaschall will likely make his debut this weekend. When Castro and Correa get healthy, Keaschall could return to the minors.
