The Guardians roll into Baltimore tonight for the series finale with a chance to clinch a winning road trip, but they’ll have to outlast a hungry Orioles squad looking to bounce back. Cleveland took Game 1 in style, but the Orioles responded with a dominant 9-1 win in Game 2, setting the stage for a high-stakes rubber match. With Tanner Bibee and Tomoyuki Sugano taking the mound, it’s a showdown of pitchers whose form has been as inconsistent as their teams’ performances. With both clubs battling for momentum, this one’s got the makings of a nail-biter. Below, I’ve got my preview, prediction, and best bet for this Thursday night baseball game between the Orioles and the Guardians.
Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.
Orioles vs. Guardians prediction, preview
The Guardians have shown flashes of quality this season, but it’s been a bit of a rollercoaster ride of Cleveland yore. Coming off a solid win in Game 1 of the series, Cleveland’s offense remains streaky, ranking 22nd in the league in runs scored and 18th in batting average. While Steven Kwan and Jose Ramirez continue to carry the load at the top of the lineup, the Guardians’ offensive struggles have been a glaring issue—especially when they face a pitcher who can neutralize their left-handed heavy lineup. Tanner Bibee (1-1, 4.40 ERA) takes the mound tonight, and while he’s shown flashes of brilliance, his inconsistency leaves room for the Orioles to capitalize, especially with a lineup that’s stacked with dangerous right-handed hitters.
On the flip side, the Orioles have stumbled early this season, but they’re not without their weapons. Tomoyuki Sugano (1-1, 3.86 ERA) has been serviceable on the mound, with solid numbers against left-handed hitters. However, his susceptibility to allowing hard contact—especially against aggressive hitters like Kwan and Ramirez—could open the door for Cleveland’s bats to come alive. The Guardians’ pitching staff has been solid, ranking 8th in team ERA (3.56), and while Bibee is still finding his groove, his ability to generate groundballs (48% in 2024) should help him avoid big innings.
Cleveland’s offense has been driven by Steven Kwan, who leads the team with a .313 batting average, 11 RBIs, and a .391 OBP. He’s also been a constant on the basepaths, with a knack for getting on base and scoring runs. Meanwhile, Jose Ramirez provides the power, leading the team with four home runs. On the mound, Tanner Bibee’s ability to keep hitters off balance with his slider and his groundball rate should keep the Orioles from breaking out. That said, Sugano has shown the ability to work through tough innings, and his ability to minimize damage with a low strikeout rate (just around 5.0 K/9 innings this season) has been key in keeping the Orioles competitive.
Guardians vs. Orioles pick, best bet
From a betting perspective, the Guardians have been impressive as road underdogs, winning four of their last five away games against teams with losing records. They’ve also gone over the total in six of their last seven games as road favorites. The Orioles, on the other hand, have struggled to cover the spread, going 6-11 against the run line this season. They’ve also failed to cover in each of their last seven home games against teams with a losing record.
When we break it down, the edge here lies in Cleveland’s ability to generate consistent offense, especially against a team like Baltimore that’s been underwhelming in all areas—batting, pitching, and defense. The Guardians’ bullpen, which has been rock solid with a 3.56 ERA, is also likely to shut down any late rallies from a Baltimore offense that’s been inconsistent. With Bibee likely to keep things in check early and Cleveland’s overall balance, they are the better side here, even on the road.
Best bet: Guardians (-118) at Orioles
