Blue Jays fans can sleep easy tonight, as they no longer have to worry about their homegrown star leaving them in free-agency this winter. Jeff Passan of ESPN is reporting that Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has agreed to a massive 14-year, $500 million contract extension to stay in Toronto.
Guerrero Jr., 26, is already a four-time MLB all-star, while boasting a career slash line of .288/.363/.499. He led MLB in home runs back in 2021 with 48, and has three seasons of 26 or more long balls before the age of 25. Guerrero Jr. also has two seasons above 5.4 WAR already, while playing at least 156 games in each of the past four years. A true superstar.
In addition to his on-field accolades, Guerrero Jr. was actually born and raised in Canada, as his father — hall-of-famer Vladimir Guerrero Sr. — was playing for the Montreal Expos at the time.
The contract is the third-largest deal in MLB history, per Passan, and will keep the first baseman in Toronto for the rest of his career.
