Alex Ovechkin ties Wayne Gretzky’s NHL all-time goals record

On Friday night against the Chicago Blackhawks, Capitals’ legend Alexander Ovechkin netted two goals to tie the all-time NHL goal record.

Ovechkin, 39, tied a record many considered unbreakable. Wayne Gretzky, the undisputed best player to ever grace the rink, took the record from Gordie Howe in 1994. The mantle will soon pass to Ovechkin as he will inevitably cement his place in the NHL history books with No. 895.

Gretzky was on hand to watch as Ovechkin tie the record with a one-timer from the left side of the net. His patented shooting location was a poetic way to get to the precipice of breaking the record.

In his 20th season, Ovechkin will look to secure the record against the Islanders, as the Capitals march toward the No. 1 overall seed in the Eastern Conference. More importantly to Ovechkin, he wants another Stanley Cup to put a bow on his resume as one of the greatest players to ever lace them up. All eyes will be on the Capitals come Sunday.
