We’re only a few days away from the 150th running of the Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby! So far there’s been one scratch, with Encino #9 not participating and Epic Ride #21 moving into the field of 20.
The post positions draw wasn’t the most favorable for the two favorites (#17 Fierceness 5-2 and #2 Sierra Leone 3-1), therefore they’ll both have to work out a good trip. The good news for Fierceness and other horses with saddle cloths 10 through 20 is because of the scratch, they all move down one spot in the starting gate, and every little bit helps.
As for Sierra Leone, his running style is to stay further back and make a run late in the race. Coming out of the #2 post, he will most likely be passed by half the field by the time they get to the first turn. That means he’ll have to circle around all of them later in the race to win it.
